I have a 1998 70 hp Johnson,4 stroke, Model J70FTLEC.
How many poles does this motor have? I have to replace the Tach and want to be sure to connect correctly. The current Tach, a Faria, has settings listed as:
1-4
2-6
3-8
4-10
5-12
6-20
Presently set on 5-12
I hooked a DVM to the sending wire and ground and had voltage that increased as RPM was increased so I think the Tach is shot(needle does not move at all).
Also, I see a switch(lever type) that is mounted beside the trim/tilt cylinders so that as the motor is lowered the switch is depressed is this a cut out switch? Or maybe for a trim gauge? I do not have a trim gauge on the boat. When I hold it down by hand the trim/tilt will still activate. I do not feel any type of contact action when lever is moved so think it may act as a Rheostat. I will go outside now and see if I can trace wires
Thanks
Michael

Re: # of Poles

Should be set to 12 (position 5)
The tach isn't a meter like a volt meter. It counts pulses from the outboard's stator. That stator has 12 poles producing 6 pulses per revolution.

There are a few reasons you can loose a tach. Power not getting to it, bad rectifier on the outboard, bad stator on the outboard, or bad tach. Chances are pretty good it's the second one there. Does your battery charge? Does the voltage go up much over 12.6v when the engine is running?

Re: # of Poles

Thanks for responding Paul. I have been out of touch and couldn't check pc. Haven't had a chance to get back to motor since I posted this.
Thanks
Michael
