Does anyone know of a website where you can find out just exactly how a vehicle is equipped from the factory?

I have a '98 GMC Sierra 1500, with the 5.0 Liter V-8 and the Automatic Trans w/OD. I bought it used in 2000, so it's been four years in my possession and it's been a great vehicle.

My boat and trailer weigh approximately 2500 to 3000 pounds. I've towed this for two seasons, but only short distances. And I have had no problems whatsoever as of yet, but I really need to make sure I'm not hurting my pickup. I'd like to take the boat to some other lakes in my area, but I haven't towed the boat over 15 miles at a time since the day I got it home.

I sure would like top be able to pop my VIN into a web page and get the info I want. I don't know what my axle ratio is or what towing options the pickup may have from the factory, and that bothers me. Is there an easy way (that means I don't have to go anywhere) to get the info I need?

Thanks!

-dd-

I don't know of such a website, but when I wanted to find out what a prospective tow vehicle was equipped with before I made an offer on it, I provided the VIN and a number off a metal tag on the rear end to my local dealer's parts counter. They were able to tell me the info I wanted off their computer. Try calling in your VIN and any number off the rear end to your local GMC/Chevy dealer's parts department; maybe they can help. Good luck.

Dogsdad I don't know of a OEM website but here is how you can tell what rearend you have. Get a helper and a piece of chalk. Mark a line on the rear tire, one aligning with it on concrete. Mark a line on the drive shaft in an easy location so the person doesn't have to get under the vehicle. Move the vehicle forward or backward one full tire rotation (Slowly and I do mean slowly) Have the helper count the drive shaft rotations until you have reached the full tire rotation. This should be your axle ratio. You should have either 3.08 or 3.42 or 3.73 or 4.10. In other words if it is a 3.42. Drive shaft will turn 3.42 times to one tire rotation. Look in your drives side door there should be a sticker with the GVWR. I have a 1/2 ton rated at 6200 lbs. It has a 3.42. Hope this helps.

GM 25years +

According to www.carpoint.com if you have the regular cab 2 wheel drive:

Maximum Towing (lb.) 7000

That assumes that you have a hitch rated at that weight or higher.

-John

Johnshan1 could be correct, but go by what is in your left door. Rear end will determine this weight/pull.
