Where can I buy an OEM lower shift cable for a 88 OMC Cobra 4.3L? I ordered an aftermarket one off amazon and it already broke and its been in my boat for about 2 weeks and only used once....does anyone know where I can order a OEM OMC lower shift cable?

Re: OEM Lower Shift Cable?

Almost all cables are going to be aftermarket at this stage of the game.. but even those should last longer than 2 weeks if installed correctly, cable failure is normally a sign it was installed improperly, and the OMC cobra outdrive requires the cable be installed a specific way with almost no variation. I think you should call it lucky that the cable broke, because if it was installed improperly, without the proper procedure and alignment tools, it would have surely destroyed the gears in the outdrive.

Did you use the alignment tools and follow the manual to the T?

That amazon kit is the exact kit that I bought and used. And yes I used both alignment tools and an OEM service manual not a stewarts or clymer manual. I followed exactly how it said and it was working fine for 2 weeks than i trimmed the engine up and the red plastic tubing separated from the brass fitting that screws into the housing I tried to push it back in but it wont stay.

I am in the middle of changing my shift cable and was thinking about this same issue. My old cable was frayed from being kinked. Should it slide in and out of the hull when the out drive is being trimmed? Do you need to lube the outer part of the cable jacket when it is installed?

Finished installing mine today and it seems to slide in and out no problem.
I will suggest before you install a new one to make sure the cable is routed properly inside the engine compartment.
Make sure you slide the plastic " wire protector" over the cable before you push it in the hose.
I sprayed mine with fluid film instead of soapy water when pushing it through.
It slides in and out when the lower end is trimmed no problem.

Maybe you just got a bad cable. Have you inquired about returning it?
