The O ring for the water inlet is damaged/missing.

Really? I had it glued in with some RTV when I put the drive back on. That could suck if that's the problem. Any idea if the o-ring from a Cobra bell housing gasket kit is the same size (accidentally bought the wrong kit first time around). This is an Alpha One Gen 2

Ayuh,.... Ya gotta pull the drive to see what's wrong, so yer Cobra kit is useless, ya need a new merc gasket set anyways,...

'n the odds are, now ya need a new lower shift cable,...
That 1s takin' a bath, which leads to an early failure,...

Fantastic. Starting to miss my old Stringer some now...

How early failure are we talking? Should it be fine through the season so I can replace it in the fall? No idea what's involved in replacing the shift cable & adjusting yet. I'll replace the gasket & o-ring now of course.

Good call on the o-ring. You can see it's a bit deformed in the first picture. Hard to see, but the mark on the mating surface on the drive itself proves it was deformed. I think I'll replace the gasket & run it for the season planning to replace the shift cable in the fall.

Also check the seal in the upper shift shaft bushing. If that's not sealing properly you will get the same problem...

possably get some water in the cavity and the end of the shift cable ,but I`ve never seen it pressurized from a bushing ..Only a O ring will pressurize the cavity.

Re: Odd water drip from shift linkage

I've seen a few with water dripping from the engine end of the shift cable because of the seals failing... Particularly the earlier seals that were just pressed into the bell housing, without the large bushing. It's the exhaust gases in the exhaust chamber that pressurises the cavity and forces the water up the cable...
