Here is a short vid of the engine running and the funky sound:

Here is a pic of where the sound seems to be emanating from. Only the lower right yellow circle is where the sound is coming from. Behind the square plate. The upper left yellow circle is where I am guessing the thermostat is. I thought it might be that because of the overheating, but the sound is throwing me off. Any thoughts would be great. Thanks.

Its an '03 3.0 I/O

1 impeller ,associated hoses and fittings
2 clogged riser/elbow/manifold
3 therm housing, thermostat
Chase your overheat in that order.

Re: Odd sound accompanied by running hot...

Thanks for the help. I did get the sound to stop and the temp to stay normal simply by squeezing the muffs tightly on the lower unit and allowing it to drink more water. Obviously an impeller issue. The noise just threw me off. Thanks again!

Did you know that you can add the upgrade engine overheat alarm on your engine very easily? The loose wire (tan/blue) in your right yellow circle pushes on the temp switch that you can replace for the black plug next to your existing temperature gauge sending unit in your picture. Many boats already have the warning buzzer under the helm, and only need the engine temperature switch screwed into the stat housing. Your engine already has all of the alarm wiring installed, and your picture has a clear shot of the one you would use.

Here is a shot of the switch installed (ignore the white wiring, you would use the tan/blue in your picture):
