Mods, please keep this here as someone who can recognize this is more likely to be found here as opposed to the trailer forum.
My new boat is a rather old one. Probably 1960's. On a rather old trailer as well. An odd thing on the trailer is that the middle roller has a lever that adjusts it up and down. Presumably to make it easier to load but still support the boat while traveling. It has a lever that you pull in and out and it has a series of Bars and joints to raise and lower the roller. Why is this there and should I keep it? Unless yall have a compelling greason to keep it we will torch it off w/ the rest of the unnessesary stuff welded onto that trailer. Will post pics as soon as I can get HP program to work.

How high does it raise the roller? Sounds like an alternative to a tilt trailer for shore launches.

Re: Odd roller adjustment on trailer

It only raises the roller about 3-4 inches. Once I get the pics off the stupid HP photoshare thingy Yall can get a better clue as to what it is.

Here is a pic of the trailer.

Here is a pic of the roller. It is welded to a peice of tubing that is around the crossbar.
b19.jpg

Here is a pic of where the handle was. It has broken off so there is only a stub left.
b17.jpg

Here is a pic of the little mechanizim where the bar turns the tubing that the roller is attached to.

If anybody has seen anuthing similar to this please tell me.

Hmmmmm. By what rationale do you conclude that a forum on boat building and restoration would have better answers to a TRAILER question than a forum on TRAILERS?

Do you think we should just eliminate the TRAILER forum? If it is no good for asking TRAILER questions, what is it there for?

When a future question arises similar to yours, a search of the TRAILER archives will reveal nothing.

TRAILER experts will never see your question unless they just happen to be into restorations also.

I really disagree with your opinion that people who can help you are more likely to look at the boat restoration forum than the TRAILER forum.

I offer no compelling reason not to cut it - - Years ago I had a trailer with rollers on the back and movable bunks on the side. It worked well.

JB. No thats not what I'm saying. I see a limited group of people who check the trailers forum daily. Many people tend to stay away from it. I just figured that someone who may have seen one 30 or 40 some odd years ago would most likely be found here. It can be moved at your discretion since you are a moderator, and no hard feelings would be had. By all means please do move it.

I was planning to cut it as I see no reason to keep it. I was just extremely curious as to what it is. The handle used to be on that stub of metal directly to the SW of the taillight.

Actually, BB, if I move this to the trailers forum it will still appear here as well and can be logged into from here.

That way we are both satisfied.

Deal?

I have spent quite a bit of time in the trailer shop, never seen anything quite like that... I would probably just cut it off if there is not obvious reason for it...

We were pllanning to fix more than just the tongue. The winch post is made from DMV signpost. And the tongue is bent in about three places. Gonna weld on a new one and change to a 2" coupler to make all my trailers the same. And my dad always runs a separate ground anyway.

I have a similar trailer except mine is a galvanized trailer for salt water. My rollers only go up and down about 2".My guess is it's to help load boat in certain situation's I think you raise rollers to load boat then lower them so your boat sits on your bunks.I have also thought of cutting them off.Not sure what genius thought of it but someone bit on the thought.Red Cobia
