Obsolete parts for a 12 year old Evinrude?

This doesn't seem right to me. I require the following diaphragm, but it is marked as obsolete?

I have a 4 stroke 15HP Evinrude - E15R4SSE. I am looking for this:

0437937 *DIAPHRAGM ASSY.

It seems to me that it would not be uncommon for this part to fail. Why is it obsolete already?

I have been contacting marinas with no luck in finding one. Any other options out there? Replacing the whole carb seems like overkill for an $18 part.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Just looked up your carb and 437937 doesn't seem to be part of the carb kit. I'd call BRP customer service and complain.

Thanks for those that offered advice.

I do plan to call Evinrude customer support Monday and ask for advice. I will likely complain as well, but I don't think that will magically make a new diaphragm appear. I might feel better though. ;)

It just doesn't seem right to discontinue parts on a motor this early.

Awesome reply, but I called them earlier today and they no longer have the part. Their online inventory hasn't been updated.

Make a new one from a diaphragm from a small fuel pump. On top of the small spring, use the 'cup' from the small pump, then glue the metal 'puck' on top.

I think I will try this if I am unable to locate one. It will be tricky though because the rubber of the diaphragm also acts as a gasket around the fuel inlet as well. Hard to explain, but it isn't just a simple round diaphragm like on a fuel pump.

Here is the latest reply I got from a dealer:

No, none anywhere, we did a national search, appears the only option is a
new carb at $593.00

I will be calling Evinrude tomorrow. I don't exactly have $600 burning a hole in my pocket. Plus, it is the principle. They will sell me a full carb with this little diaphragm in it. Which indicates that they still make the diaphragm, but only include it with a whole new carb.

Try Suzuki, this motor made by them.

Try Seaway they might have it. You will have to call them though as they generally don't list NLA items on their website.

Small world. I live in Ottawa as well.

On your advice I called Seaway Marine. No luck finding the part. I've called or emailed several other marinas / parts dealers with no luck. I called BRP tech support and they were less then helpful. I have run out of ideas.

It was suggested that I make a new diaphragm from a diaphragm for a small fuel pump (great idea and description Haffiman). What glue should I use if I attempt this? It would have to be resistant to gasoline, flexible and stick to the diaphragm material (is it rubber?). Has anyone done this successfully?

I've been looking and can't find a used carburetor either. I'm at the point where I would be willing to pay a couple hundred dollars for this stupid diaphragm.

I guess persistence pays off. After several days of emailing and calling places (shotgun approach), I finally found the part I need. The dealer knows it is impossible to find and had inflated the price to $50, but I don't care. I am just happy to get one.

I had purchased a tube of Seal-All today and was planning on following Haffiman's instructions. I am glad I won't have to.

Thank you so much to everyone that offered advice.

I'm new to this forum. I'm in the same spot you were.
What marine dealer had your part - perhaps they have another one?

Thanks!

I bought the last one they had in stock. However, I do have a bit of a lead for another one. PM sent with the details.
