Ok, I know this thread has been posted before, but almost all of the replies have listed artists, and not specific songs. I'm looking to load up my iPod with songs that go great on the water.
So... Which specific songs are your favorites on the boat?

Example:
"Boat Drinks", by Jimmy Buffet
"Snow", by Red Hot Chili Peppers

Re: Obligatory Boat Songs

The ultimate boat song to me would probably be Amazing Grace, i believe; if i'm not mistaken, it was a boat song long before it came to be refered to as a hymn.
Somehow i don't think that you're thinking about sailing ships weathering the high seas, something from Iron-Maiden or Judas-Priest perhaps?

OK! then can we settle for "Row row yer boat"? :D

Pirate Looks at Forty

Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call,
Wanted to sail upon your waters
since I was three feet tall.
You've seen it all, you've seen it all.

Watch the men who rode you,
Switch from sails to steam.
And in your belly you hold the treasure
that few have ever seen, most of them dreams,
Most of them dreams.

Yes, I am a pirate two hundred years too late.
The cannons don't thunder there's nothin' to plunder
I'm an over forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late.

I've done a bit of smugglin'
I've run my share of grass.
I made enough money to buy Miami,
But I pissed it away so fast,
Never meant to last, never meant to last.

I have been drunk now for over two weeks,
I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks,
But I've got to stop wishin',
Got to go fishin', I'm down to rock bottom again.
Just a few friends, just a few friends.

Instrumental

I go for younger women, lived with several awhile
And though I ran away, they'll come back one day.
And still could manage a smile
It just takes awhile, just takes awhile.

Mother, mother ocean, after all these years I've found
My occupational hazard being my occupations
just not around.
I feel like I've drowned,
Gonna head uptown.

Re: Obligatory Boat Songs

Those are all great songs but, I like to sing while I boat... I also write my own songs....

" Oooohhh, The faster I go, The more it costs me."

"Watch out, theres a dead carp in the riverrr. If you hit it, Its going to stink."

" Waitin' on a barge, sittin below a dam. I guess its time for a nap."

" Hey, Look, Thats a big Rooster Tail, Awe sh!T the minnow bucket!!!"

Re: Obligatory Boat Songs

Anything by the late, great Stan Rogers - one of Canada's finest singer/songwriters. In particular " The Mary Ellen Carter"

She went down last October in a pouring driving rain.
The skipper, he'd been drinking and the Mate, he felt no pain.
Too close to Three Mile Rock, and she was dealt her mortal blow,
And the Mary Ellen Carter settled low.
There were five of us aboard her when she finally was awash.
We'd worked like hell to save her, all heedless of the cost.
And the groan she gave as she went down, it caused us to proclaim
That the Mary Ellen Carter would rise again.

Well, the owners wrote her off; not a nickel would they spend.
She gave twenty years of service, boys, then met her sorry end.
But insurance paid the loss to them, they let her rest below.
Then they laughed at us and said we had to go.
But we talked of her all winter, some days around the clock,
For she's worth a quarter million, afloat and at the dock.
And with every jar that hit the bar, we swore we would remain
And make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again.

Rise again, rise again, that her name not be lost
To the knowledge of men.
Those who loved her best and were with her till the end
Will make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again.

All spring, now, we've been with her on a barge lent by a friend.
Three dives a day in hard hat suit and twice I've had the bends.
Thank God it's only sixty feet and the currents here are slow
Or I'd never have the strength to go below.
But we've patched her rents, stopped her vents, dogged hatch and
porthole down.
Put cables to her, 'fore and aft and birded her around.
Tomorrow, noon, we hit the air and then take up the strain.
And watch the Mary Ellen Carter Rise Again.

For we couldn't leave her there, you see, to crumble into scale.
She'd saved our lives so many times, living through the gale
And the laughing, drunken rats who left her to a sorry grave
They won't be laughing in another day. . .
And you, to whom adversity has dealt the final blow
With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go
Turn to, and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain
And like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again.

Rise again, rise again - though your heart it be broken
And life about to end
No matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, a friend.
Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again.
;)

I like kickin some 80's metal on the lake. Poison, Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Warrant, Ratt, etc work well to keep the party going. Journey, Boston, Genisis, and other good ol rock bands are awesome to cruise into the sunset with. Jimmy Buffett is a must. Still on occasion I'll crank some modern metal just to hear the subwoofers I installed get workin.

There's an awful lot of good stuff from "Great Big Sea," a group out of Newfoundland. "Lukey's Boat" is on a couple of the CDs I take out on the water, as is "Jolly Roving Tar." They're worth checking out.
