OB Gas tank storage question ...

In northern states and Canada OB gas tanks are stored for 6 to 8 months, and it's always been said they need to be filled with gasoline to prevent corrosion. Now for me that's 2 tanks totaling 10 gallons of fire hazard material in my garage which is attached to my house. Would'nt there be a safer way to protect our gas tanks ?

So my question is this: how about mixing a full quart of 2 cycle oil with let's say one pint of petrol (or less) ... dumping that mix in an empty gas tank and simply shake the tank to make sure all internal sides are coated ? Would that be a good enough protection ??

Thank you all for your feedback.

Sounds good. I don't do anything and leave my one steel tank where it's at (empty, full, inbetween) here in Vermont. Never had a problem with rust. I say keep it empty in a dry location or at least one with constant temp (basement) to keep the condensation forming inside.

Are they portable tanks? I switched to the plastic ones and I just leave outside and don't worry about it. I never, ever, ever leave fuel tanks in a garage or any enclosed living space(furnaces, hot water heaters ect.), it ain't worth it for a $25 tank. I'd buy a new one every year before I put it in a living space.

As far as I can remember, last fall there was a lot of talks about gas tank storage having to be filled for winter storage ... and it did not cross my mind to ask where those tanks where stored.

Now what about the oil that remains on the inner walls of the tank ... would that end up as some sort of varnish that would end up in the carburator ? If so, then I would also guess that an empty tank would need to be rinsed and flushed in the spring prior to usage ... Tx

Then wont there be gum and varnish building up in an empty tank stored for 6 months or so ?
