I'm looking at a 1988 100hp commercial Johnson. The guy has it on a stand but the wiring harness and fuel are not hooked up. It's been sitting in his garage in San Diego for two years and it's unknown whether it was prepped properly for long storage. I know you are suppose to warm up the engine to check the compression but what would it tell me (about the compression) if I checked it cold?

Re: OB compression check??

COMPRESSION ON THOSE ENGINES RUN AROUND 120 TO 125 THE RULE OF THUMB IS READINGS SHOULD NOT BE MORE THAN 15% DIFFERENCE OF ONE ANOTHER ALSO IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO VISUALLY LOOK INSIDE CYLINDERS WITH A BENDA LITE FOR SCUFFING ON CYLINDER WALLS COMPRESSION CAN SHOW GOOD AND STILL HAVE A SCUFFED CYLINDER ALSO IF THIS ENGINE HAS SET AS LONG AS YOU SAY IT HAS YOU WILL NEED A WATER PUMP AND CARBS GONE THROUGH AS WELL SO USE THIS INFORMATION WHEN NEGOTIATING A PRICE HOPE THIS HELPS
