Hi

I own a 1997 Yamaha 30HP Oil Injected 2 stroke outboard . I bought the
engine off an old couple and there was barely 10 hours on the motor , it was
still on the last tank of break-in fuel mixture when I got it . Sadly the
gentleman passed away and the lady didn't use the motor again . I estimate
it sat for a couple years with fuel in the carbs . Now , it runs fine at
idle and anything passed about 1/8th throttle . At 1/8th it sputters and
acts like its missing , then goes fine passed that . I want to take it in to
a shop and get the carbs cleaned . Or should I ask for them to be rebuilt ?
With that low of hours Im hoping to get by with a cleaning , hopefully ?
What is a fair price for this job(either cleaning , rebuilding ) ? The
engine is a 3 cyl. 3 carb type . Appreciate any thoughts .

Thanks

Jeff

I would consider allowing them 1.5 hours of labor for each carb plus one hour on and a half hour off. That means most of the day in the shop plus the carb kits and notwithstanding any surprises.

You might want to try this yourself.

I'm a noice when it comes to outboards, but following a manual made working on the carbs relatively simple. The carb kits were only about $25 Canadian per carb.

The first carb took a while just because I had to keep referring back to the manual, but after that it went relatively quickly.

If in the end it doesn't run any better, you are only out the cost of a few carb kits and an afternoon of your time. You could then take it in to the shop.

Good Luck!

You know , thats what Im going to do . Itll be a great learning experience and first I think Ill clean them and see how it runs before I buy the kits . I figure if I can rebuild my entire Jeep from the ground up I can do this :D
Thanks for the nudge in the right direction .

Jeff
