Can anyone tell me what the speed limit through the NY canals is? I have searched a number of sources and come up with either 5 or 10 MPH. We were in the canal this past Saturday, and the speed of the other boats around us seemed to vary greatly. Thanks for any information.

5mph although I always see people cruising much faster. The 5mph is to limit the erosion on the canal banks.

Thanks for the responses. Im confused because on the canal system web site, they say 5 mph where posted, and 10 MPH through rockcuts and landcuts. I'm thinking this means 10 MPH not in the vicinity of the locks or marinas?

It's 10 mph. When u approach a lock or marina play it safe & watch your wake. The speed limit was raised in certain sections last spring, but was reduced back to 10 mph due to idiots that showed no regard for other boaters & also due to bank erosion.

I slipped my boat at Snug Harbor 1st season I bought it, but found the dock fees a bit steep. Nice place though. The Nation owns it now, don't they?

Yes, they do. I think the biggest advantage of Snug Harbor is its location on the lake,,,,,,, turn west, you're in the lake,,,,,turn east, go up the canal. For us, it means we can still go boating when the wind whips the lake up. Thier dock fees for my boat are about $100.00 higher for the season than other marinas, but I like the location.

Yep, you're right there. I changed my mind about renting a slip at Marion Manor, cuz if the lake's rough you're out of luck. If you don't mind me asking, what are you paying for the slip?

19 foot boat, in at ice out, out by the second week in November, $760.00. I figure its like an extra mortgage payment for the year, lol.
