number of poles for a tachometer

hello everyone,
I need to install a tach on my 91' Force 50HP. can anyone tell me how to find out how many poles I have. Model # Is
508F91C. thanks in advance for your help.

I was told a sure fire way is to look under your flywheel and count them.

As bhile said it's a 12 pole. if you had a early 55hp (1968-1983) it would 20 poles. 50hp through 1987 A&B were 8 poles. Also 50hp 1992 B and later are 12 poles. 40hp and 70hp 1991 and later are 12 poles so I would say its safe to assume its a 12 pole.
