I have less than 20 lbs of compression out of cyl 3. 125 lbs out of all other cyl. can I remove just the top plate that the spark plugs go into to tell if the rings are bad/cyl walls scored etc. and if so I read because of very little piston weight difference you can rebuild just one cyl.bore it .015 over etc. is this advisable or should it all be done at one time. merc 115 1976.

You can do only one hole. That's fine for OB's. What motor? Are you refering to the cylinder head? If so, removing it will show the pistion top condition and the cylinder walls, as well as the head gasket, which may be blown (you should hope for that).

yes I was refering to the cyl head, and I am praying for a blown gasket. I am not sure what I will do if it is anything else. maybe rebuild.

Reesek -

1976 merc 115 has no removable head. If you have never rebuilt one of these before there will be more suprizes for you as well. That plate that looks like a head gasket is only a cover for the water jacket. Real EZ to break bolts on that plate so I would advise that you leave it alone for now.

The exhast side is prone to broken blot's also. But the intake doen't get as hot. On the side of the motor with the starter motor you should find 3 plates that cover the transfer ports. Take the second one off and it will allow you to get an "improved" view of whats going on.

If your still praying - change your prayer to "stuck rings" and pray a lot.

If after looking through the intake side you cannot rectify the low compression than a complete teardown is neccessary. There are many people here more qualified than I am to walk you through it, but it's a lot of work. If you decide to have a pro rebuild it you can go that way to but it will cost more.

Also there is another message board devoted soley to the caring and feeding of these particular outboards. I don't have the link to it here on this computer but if you do a search you will find it.

#3 is very common with these motors. The most common reason for it's failure is dirty carb's. I run seafoam in all my motors now (truck, lawnmower, etc..) and it seems to do a good job of cleaning things and stabilizing the gas.

Good luck.

Re: number 3 no compression

are you talking about the news link I found that but a little hard to follow in outlook. I removed the intake cover no good news small amount of metal shavings 2 out of 3 rings welded to piston and ground down. plus I can take my finger and get movement at rear of piston, more than from cyl 4. looks like a bore job with oversized piston. I have learned a valuable lesson. I just bought this boat for a 1500 if I ever buy another boat I will check compression first. this motor started very well and idled good when the person showed me it. I assumed the engine would idle rough and be very hard to start. after reading some post it seems the inline 6 can cover up a multitude of problems.

I think you probably found the right one. I did a search on the word bigweek and found an old posting:

news.kraits.org and the newsgroup is: bigweek.mercury-inlines.

It's all in-lines 6's almost all the time. I lurk there myself a lot. You can get some great advise from the "masters" but they post here sometimes too..
