New to me, 2 months, 1997 Yamaha 150 ProV outboard powering 21 foot Anger CC, was running great. Took boat off lift for winter servicing, put on fresh water flushing adapter, after running three minutes at 1500 turns, get an alarm? Checked water flow, plenty of water flowing. Water is coming out of **** tube. Checked oil, plenty of oil in tank and engine mounted tank. Motor does not seem to be hot. Let stand 30 minutes, restartred, same thing alarm/buzzer. I am not sure whether the alarm is oil or heat related.
Questions:
1. How did I tell whether alarm is overheating or low oil? Boat and motor new to me with no literature.
2. How do I check to ensure thermostat is good/bad?
3. How much water flow should I get from **** tube at idle and 1500 turns with fresh water hose connected?
4. ROUGHLY... if the water pump needs to be replaced, what is a reasonable price to expect to pay, NORTHERN NECK Virginia, at a reputable marine retailer?

Any other suggestions, I am new to outboards but have considerable experience with automobile engines.
Thanks in advance
Bill

If its the overheat alarm and the motor is cooling, the temp sensor is most likely bad.

I don't believe you are supposed to run the motor while on the Freshwater Flusher.

Check your manual, but I believe this is ONLY for flushing the engine. Also, I heard and saw for myself that large Yamaha OB's should not really be run from the "muffs". They require more water than can be put thru these muffs and frequently overhead on people.

Good Luck,

John

Hello there you say youy ran the motor on the flush attachment was it the muffs or the attachment on the block? you can run these fine on the muffs just make sure you cover the entire intake holes these motors work on high volume water not pressure they will burn pumps quick.I found we were replacing our yamys pump every 2 year. to check you r oil alarm in the tank on the motor there is a float switch un plug the harness from here when the alarm goes off if it is the oil alarm it will shut the alarm off ( make sure you plug it back in after test). good luck
trev. :p
