Misty, what sort of boat and what tabs do you have? I'm sure that someone here will be happy to assist. Chief

Re: nstalling trim tabs

I installed Trim Master tabs on my boat, the kit did come with very good instructions and Templates. I cut the templates out using some cardboard to match the hinge side of the tabs and measured location and checked several times. I then taped area to be drilled ( this helps prevent chipping the gelcoat) with heavy masking tape, then I taped the templates in place and checked measurements again. Once satisfied location is correct pilot drill screw holes with small bit (use a new sharp bit) then follow with the recommended size bit , after final size hole has been drilled use a larger bit to chamber the holes just a little bit, this also helps prevent cracking gelcoat when tabs get screwed into place. Use 3M 4200 to fill screw holes and also coat the first few threads of screws for a nice water tight seal and snug screws, do not overtighten you could strip out the wood and then have a loose fit. Its not that difficult to install tabs just plan ahead be sure you cover all bases before you start such as trim pump location, Tab control switches at the helm and wiring and hydrolic lines and take your time your not getting paid by the hour.

What brand are they? If you bought them new the manufacturers all have excellent customer service numbers. IF you got them used do a search under trim tab installation. If they are Smart Tabs then NautiJohn will be along shortly. He knows his stuff.

Most of the trim tab manufacturers have on line instructions available and toll free numbers for tech suport. If you have questions regarding Smart Tabs call us at 800-233-0194 or go to our web site at www.nauticusinc.com to down load the instructions.

Why your dealer would not want to install trim tabs is beyond me! Unless the old cop-out standard is used "our boats don't need trim tabs". May be he sells sail boats.

Once you have the correct sized and chamfered holes, insert the screws (without the tabs) dry. This will cur the threads in the transom material. Then, remove the screws, put the sealant in the holes and continue installing the tabs. The screws will go in easier and more sealant will remain in the holes.
