I was thinking all the camshafts in the NSF 4/5/6 were the same, but I stumbled on a parts list for the 4A/5A/6A series that looks like there were different camshafts for these models. Looks like when they went to the A2 versions the camshafts were all the same. I assume the same applies to the Tohatsu and Merc versions of these motors? Would be good info to know if you pick up one of the older motors, as (I think) it means you'd have to change a cam and the carb to go from 4 or 5 to 6HP. Does this make sense?

The Mark 6 camshaft was made universal across all the MFS/NSF 4/5/6 in about 2001. This would also apply to Merc and Evinrude motors. So, if you have an original 4A, you may want to swap for the Mark 6 Cam when upgrading the carb. However, I have never had an issue just swapping carbs.

There were Evinrude versions of these motors?

Yep, if not mistaken 15 HP and under are rebadged Evi ones. As not to lose their market share bearing their own reputed brand name in portable OB's.
