It looks to me that to remove the lower unit I need to remove two pins from the shift linkage. Will I hurt or bend anything using a punch set and can the pins be reused? If these are not the proper steps please enlighten me. Thanks

Yes, that will work, can use pin back if not deformed. Remove upper pin, clean internal connector hole, apply grease to pin before assembling back, will slide much better. Could use plier to insert pin back once aligned to hole.
