I can't seem to find a new impeller or water pump for a 1990 Nissan NS70A2. Everywhere I go, or call, I get the answer it's no longer made, out of stock, not available, ect. So for the lack of one little rubber part I have a 70HP boat anchor? Overall, the outboard is excellant, great powerhead, LU, prop, CDI, starter, the whole nine yards. Just a bad impeller. Surely, someone out here in Iboats land knows, has heard of, or can assist somehow. Is there any other impeller that will fit drive shaft, a modification that can be made to another part #, or a work around? I really don't want to sell this as parts, or as pieces, it's been a great engine, just no water out of the witness hole, or only for a short time, then the motor heats up, and the pump quits showing water. I still have water exiting the exhaust hub, some, but nothing from the witness hole, or the exhaust port below the powerhead housing cover. I've torn it down four times, tried all I know, and still no luck. Only pumps for a short time, then quits. Seal on upper water pump housing seems to have space around driveshaft, wonder if it is cavitating air into vane area, and scavenging to get enough water to pump up the tube. Any held is appreciated. After my expierence with a Honda riding tractor, and now this Nissan outboard, and the related dropping of maintnence items and repair parts availability, I'm gonna make my next purchase black or grey. Mercury or Evinrude or Force/OMC. May not be all American made, but at least they offer parts. I can still get Model A parts, early Chevy parts, heck, even Dodge, Studebaker, ect. But nothing simple as a rubber impeller for a twenty year old outboard?? That spells to me that Nissan/Tohatsu are not desiring to remain in business long. At least not for this century. Call me a disappointed ole' skool fool. Should have bought a Snapper, and a Merc.

Yes

No

Correct

When Snapper gets into the outboard business you should get one. Until then I should probably tell you that every brand of outboard has a model(s) less than 20 years years old, that has something that is no longer available for it.

Re: NS70A2 outboard help

I own the same motor also and was dissapointed that Nissan quit making the water pump and impeller. There is a guy called kat69 on fishnet.com that makes reproduction impellers for that model outboard. He is in Australia and said he will export them to the U.S. Also I spoke to a marine dealer in Costa Mesa, Ca. that says they find an impeller of the same diameter and bore out the center and press in the right size center keyed bushing. So there are some people out there that care and believe there is still a great market for these great running motors. Hopefully Sierra will start to make parts for this model in the future like other Nissans they provide for.

First, Thanks for replying and for the assistance in at least a workaround or a source. I will follow that lead on the gent in Kiwi land, and see if there's a probable. :)

Re: NS70A2 outboard help

Hey Traveler, Do you still have your 70? And can you give me any further information about the guy called Kat69, like an email address or anything. I like the idea of finding a same diameter impeller and boring the center out to fit the original bushing. Careful measure and slight press fit, along with an epoxy waterproof glue should hold it together and keep the impeller from spinning on the bushing. Like I said, I'm a thinker, and a do'er, and work around issue's all the time. Yankee ingenuity is what drove the growth of this Nation, and gave us all the mechanical wonders we now have. And, My Kindest Regards to you and Thanks for your assistance and reply. Please advise me on the above when possible.

Re: NS70A2 outboard help

Hey slats101, I don't have any contact info on kat69, as I have not had to contact him yet. I would try registering with fish.net and pming him. I hope he will come through for all our future impeller and water pump needs.

Hey slats101, keep us Nissan owners informed on your impeller retrofit. If you find a proper close match post the info for the good of all us yankee do it yourselfers. Meanwhile I have left a message for kat69 on the fishnet.com.au and MarineEngine.com forum for his impeller. There are still a fair number of these motors around in use. Thanks, Jim.

Story teaches that if you plan to keep running an oldie as in the good old days, you should have in stock small principle parts for that model or you will definitely stay boat grounded.

my friends and i are tryn to put our heads together to make and engineer a motor that doesn't cost 7-10 thousand dollars for a new one especially when you can buy a cobra jet motor for a Shelby mustang or 800 for a standard fuel injected 302 so we will begin now.

Re: NS70A2 outboard help

He should have known better.

Not true on all counts.

There several impellers that can be made to fit. Unfortunately the tips are different as well as the shaft insert. They do not provide the necessary resistance to the water at high RPM to force the correct amount of water up to the power head.

Beware....Of course what do you really have to lose since the engine is useless, at this point, anyway:) Maybe you will get lucky and get some use out of it before the big fry.

Re: NS70A2 outboard help

I've corresponded with the guy in Australia, seems like a good option. I have the same motor in excellent condition, same issue. Plus the tilt/trim works but won't hold the motor in the up position. And guess what, those units are no longer available either. But I have found a mechanic that actually takes them apart and rebuilds the valve body (which is very rare amongst mechanics, they'd rather replace than rebuild, takes less time and costs less to the owners, which makes sense).

So, I'm either going to try the Australia option, and if it works, then try to get the tilt/trim fixed and I'll be good for awhile. OR, I'll find a newer 70h Tohatsu Model C and just replace my motor, then try to sell the old one for parts on craigslist.

As to Evinrude or Merc, smaller Merc's are made by Tohatsu... ;-) Tohatsu's are very good motors.

I just had to jump in on this thread. Tohatsu Guru is not such a Guru. I had the same problem and found a replacement impeller that I made work. The one problem with the replacement impeller is NOT at the high rpm range but at the low rpm range. The issue is, the replacements that people are selling are too narrow for the water pump cup. I found a fix in a plastic shim, .060-.070 " thick. This filled the gap and I have been running well since. If anyone needs to source an impeller, shoot me an email and I will forward the setails on where to source. philip.poeschl@tsi.com

I should clarify, the ones I got are not from the guy in Austrailia. His appear to be dimensioned to be the same as the original and would not need the shim.

Re: NS70A2 outboard help

Sorry I missed that there is some impeller, somewhere in the world, that can be modified to fit that pumps at high RPM and not low RPM. Seriously?

Here's the story. When I needed a now impeller I started searching. The only direct replacement is some guy making them in his garage in Austrailia. They look to be direct copies and should work. But he is busy so un-available at this time. I found two other people selling what they call are a replacement impeller. So I bought one from each. What they shipped is not even close to the original, however, they do fit in the cup. When I tried them, they cooled fine at any rpm except idle where the motor over-heated. The impellers are .06" narrower than the original. So the impeller was capable of supplying enough volume of water at high rpm but at low rpm, the gap between the impeller and the cup allowed to much leakage past the blades and consequently, over-heating. So I made a plastic shim .060 out of polyethlene and filled the gap. Now it cools very well at all rpms.

I have one other long term option for this impeller. Globe Composites makes many impellers that could be made to fit with minimal machining of the ID. And the Globe Composite impeller I found is much close in OD than the original so I would expect good performance and longevity. It too is .060" narrower so would need a .06" shim. They also offer an impeller that is 1.25" thick that could be machined down to the .94" thick of the original that could work also.
