NS40D2 ~ Water pump lower oil seal question

I am putting the water pump back together and in the OEM service manual it shows a spacer/washer between the two back-to-back oils seals.
I ordered the parts from the parts manual (last fall) ....and did order the shim, but am not sure why now.

1) The question is that on disassembly, there was no shim installed in that location...straight from the factory. I am the original owner.
What is the purpose of that shim. and was it added as an afterthought?

2) The manual indicates a couple of different sealers and lubes for this application....including an anaerobic sealer.
I was just going to use what I had on hand, but on second thought decided to get the correct Loctite product and other lube.

When I removed the two oil seals, they had been installed with generous coat of some grease. This is not mentioned in the manual.

Should this be a silicone based grease or can I just use regular grease or gear oil?

1) Shim's are to compensate for tolerances due to the bearing deviation.

2) Doesn't matter

1) So do I need to measure anything and maybe add more than one shim....or just use the one that I have? Should there actually have been a shim put in at the factory?

2) Thanks.

As long as you did not disturb anything in the gears, use whatever shim pack (or lack thereof in your case) when you reassemble.

Armed with his trusty service manual Tim checked the correct tolerances and discovered that he did not need to change shims.

Tim has checked his trusty service manual, PN 003-21038-1, and can't find any info regarding this tolerance.....that's why I asked the question. :D

I've rebuilt gearcases and transmissions where there is a critical clearance/backlash/end float that you adjust with a variety of shim thicknesses; but this is a wayyyy less critical situation....I think. :)

There is only one shim option listed in the parts book, so that was what I ordered ~ and it does not actually list a thickness.

In fact I ordered from the parts book before I took the L/U off to replace the impeller with the w/pump kit. I probably do not need to change some of the seals, but the parts are cheap (comparatively)

Re: NS40D2 ~ Water pump lower oil seal question

Tim, having looked in his manual, discovered that the shim was required and that it did not require a measurement...Something he pointed out in a shamelessly funny way:) That particular shim is more of a standard washer than anything else. The adjustable shim is down just below that one.
