I guess this post is aimed mostly at Tohatsu Guru. My local Nissan dealer ordered some parts for me on the 12th and said they would be in on the 19th. When I checked on the 19th, the 20th, and the 21st and again today I was told their parts supply system was very erratic and he didn't know when my stuff might arrive. He said the worst part of his business was making excuses for their parts supply system.

I have read some of your previous posts on this subject and get the feeling that what I am being told is not quite accurate. Do the local dealers have to place a order with a distributor who then in turn orders from Nissan and then the reverse happens with the shipment, going to the distributor and then to the local shop? They didn't tell me that I just thought that could be part of the problem.

The opening of lake fishing is coming soon here in Washington State and I would like to have this engine ready.

Re: NS3.5B Nissan parts availability

Jim,

From the point the Tohatsu or Nissan dealer actually orders the parts it takes two business days to arrive at that dealer. Authorized Nissan/Tohatsu dealers order directly from Tohastu in Dallas or from us if Dallas is out of stock. They process and ship the same day up to 1 PM CMT. They default ship by 2nd day FedEx. Worse case is three days by ground to Washington. I guess what I'm trying to tell you is that your local dealer didn't/hasn't ordered the parts.

In general, outboard dealers for all Japanese engines tend to place their part orders once or twice per week rather than daily like Mercury dealers do. Usually it's not because they are trying to screw people over, but more a case of waiting for someone else to need an additional item. The freight cost to the dealer averages around $10.00 to $14.00 so if they can stretch out the order placement time they might get to order more parts on the same shipment and save them an additional $12.00. It's very easy to shift the blame to the manufacturer rather then for the dealer to come clean and say I forgot, or it wasn't worth the effort. At one time or another I have been a dealer for every brand except Evinrude and the worse company for backorders was Mercury. Suzuki, which has always had the worse reputation for parts, was actually the best for order filling. Honda was hit or miss, but not where it ever took over a month. Yamaha wasn't bad, but when they are out in the U.S. I've seen a delay as long as 45 days. Tohatsu is about the same...usually very good, but sometimes up to 45 days if someone goofs a forecast. Our only backorder at present with Tohatsu is two weeks old for some seal kits that we actually have a couple of in stock.

You can call Tohatsu at 972-323-6003 tomorrow and check and see if they have an order from your dealer....and when it was really placed :)

Re: NS3.5B Nissan parts availability

Elvin,
Tohatsu did everything right, my dealer did not tell me the truth about when he placed the order. I walked in to his shop this morning knowing the parts were going to be there. When I walked in he smiled and said "Your parts are here" and I said "Ya, I know I called Tohatsu" and he exploded and threw the head across the shop. He said "Don't you trust me?" After he looked at his order pad order date he got real quiet and apologized. I should have it running tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

Anytime....But, I'm not sure that I really did anymore than shift the blame to where it belonged :)
