I bought one of these long shaft Nissans from a friend very cheap because he needed the money and I needed it for my sailboat. It didn't spring right to life so we disassembled and cleaned the carburetor in the process of that one of the ignition lines going to the spark plug broke . It broke right where the spark plug fits onto it so we were able to sort of glue it back together and put a little copper wire in to make sure there was a connection. The engine did start and does start reliably so I am not sure if this is related to the problemthough it could be. The problem is the outboard will start and run fine in a high-speed although it makes a lot of horrible noise I guess that may be normal for these outboards but it will not idle down if you try to idle it down past half throttle it stalls. My best guess is that maybe it is sucking too much air because of a missing or corroded gasket in the carburetor because there are a few. I believe the one that mounts the carburetor on the powerhead is either missing or severely corroded. Unfortunately I cannot find a good place to buy these without buying the whole $75 carburetor rebuild kit . If I'm going to be spending $75 on that and another 100 on the new ignition cables I'm just going to get a new outboard. Can anyone tell me what my problem might be? Any good suppliers for gaskets for these motors? I guess I could just cut my own out of gasket Paper any and all advice appreciated thanks

Don't need to change complete plug cable, but will need to replace broken plug cap, if cap is shorting to ground due to being broken can shot the Ignition Coil, but on those there`s a IC/CD one pack unit. How old is that 9.8 B, was it used on salt water, was it conveniently fresh water flushed after its use ? Can get parts from any Tohatsu dealer, don't need a complete carb kit, probably just float chamber o'ring, Check fuel pump internal parts as diaphragm. If dried, hardened deformed, ballooned, change it.

Happy Boating

Parts are available from any dealer. You can find your closest dealer using the dealer locator on tohatsu.com. No, there are not many gaskets in that carb. In fact, there is only one: the bowl o-ring. There are fuel pump gaskets, but if they leak, you would know immediately. The carb base gasket is 2 bux:
369020110MGASKET$2.00

If you had the carb off to clean it, you should not need to guess whether the carb base gasket is present and in good condition. Odds are you still need to clean the carb properly, in a bath of real carb dip, for at least 4 hours, and then blow out all the passages with generic carb spray. To do that, you must do a removal and complete disassembly (including jets and emulsion tube nozzle, and then clean all the non-rubber parts.

You can get replacement plug wire caps from your dealer as well.
3C7069210MPLUG CAP (WITH WATERPROOF RESISTANCE)$25.00

Incidentally, a new 9.8 will run you over $2000, so spending a bit to get that super-light 9.8 running is well worth it.
