I'm far from an expert, but I do have a suggestion. I recently experienced a weak spark condition on one cylinder of my Johnson 70hp 1980. I replaced the coil for that cylinder ($20) and all was well. If noone else suggests anything, try that...it's only $20, right? Easy job, too. Took about 15 minutes.

putney, i have an older Johnson (68)....Was your coil easy to get to?...and did you have to mess with the points and condensers?...or are the coils pretty easy to isolate and replace without messing w/ the points/condensers ?

My coils are easily accessible...they are bolted to the side of the block, towards the back of the engine. I didn't have to mess with anything else. Like I said, I'm far from an expert....I'm not sure what your set-up is. Sorry.

I had a weak spark on all plugs.. pulled my hair out on this one.. changed the stator, plugs etc.. still weak spark.. pay attention to this one..
the wiring showes that the ground that feeds/returns the spark is directly connected to the cdi pack, I got another wire from the pack and wired it directly to the head, then I bonded the rest of the engine just to make sure..
everything is good now..
