Ahhh. It's sturgeon fishing time again on the wonderful Kalifornistan Delta! I made my first cruise of the season down to Suisun Bay, just above San Pablo and San Francisco Bays, to try for a mighty sturgeon.

I spent the night at anchor out in the remoteness of Suisun Bay, miles from anyone or anywhere. It's a great place to get away from it all. In the 20 hours I was there, not one boat passed within a mile of my anchorage. I love it!

And I got a huge one! Well... for about five minutes he was beside the boat in submission, but he made one final, valiant effort and won his freedom. And he earned it as he was a great fighter.

The story is on my website (stories and photos only, there are no ads) along with a video of the fight.

We have them in the great lakes and connecting waters, every year one of my friends or me will hook one on walleye gear, and it is fun to chase these guys with the hope of a picture at the end of the battle. I have hooked a few, but never managed to put one in the boat. One was wider than my Lund Tyee by 2-3 feet, that one was a monster. Most of our fish here are only 4-6 footers, the biggest I have managed to grab but not lift over the side of the boat was maybe 50-60 lbs. Spring is coming, and so will our chance again at one of these. We have guys that will fish for them, by targeting them, but I seem to do better than them by accident.
