Hey all,
I have recently found out that my 25 horse Yamaha was not stored inside before my relatives left for warmer weather. I live in Michigan so it got pretty cold. I will be taking it to my Auto shop at school tomorrow to assess the damages, but what are my chances that the block is cracked? Also, where can I find specifications like the compression and torque specs?
Thanks,
Carl

Re: NOT WINTERIZED-HELP!

If the motor was stored vertically, all the water should have drained out of the cooling passages. Compression should be over 100, with both cyls within 10-15% of each other. Pick up a manual at a boat shop or online, they're worth their weight in gold!

My father commonly stores his 25 HP Merc on the end of his boat all winter wrapped up in a tarpaulin. We are in Newfoundland and our weather is worse than yours, I'll wager. He has'nt had a hitch in the 20 years that he's had the thing.

Hey Newhook

I have been to Newfoundland, I understand you have an average year round temp of 75 F. I don't think you can compare your weather with that of more harsher climates.

Gary

Allright,
The results are in: Compression is over 100 on both, and the sparkplugs looked great. can't run it inside because of the water, and it's still a bit cold outside. but i will start it up as soon as we get some warmer weather. Thanks for all the help.
-Carl

Yes, I am going to drain the oil tomorrow and add fresh oil. I also plan to drain, clean, and add new gear lube in the gearbox.
-Carl

MSU, Drain the oil from the lower unit and install fresh oil. Check for water in the oil and excessive flakes of metal on the magnetic drain plug.

As said previously, if the motor was upright (vertical) you should have no problems in the power head area.

Check for instructions on winterizing OB engines.

GF

You may be single handedly misleading an entire generation on the weather in Newfoundland. While I and the Nfld. tourism industry all wish for weather like you have in Nova Scotia, we, just last year, fell victim to in excess of 6 metres (that's 18 feet ) of snow. It was warm snow though.

Newhook

495v

Our our friend is poking a little fun at us in Nfld. :) He is from here so he may be excused. The weather is bloody awful here though. Doesn't stop people though. Lakes open in May but people may be seen hunting seabirds (Murrs, Salt-water ducks and seals) even in the Winter.

Hav'nt you seen the movies "The Shipping News", "A Whale for the Killing" "Orca" "Rare Birds" or the old B&W "The Viking"? They will give a taste of the place.

Re: NOT WINTERIZED-HELP!

Have not seen any of those movies. Are you revealing your age to us? I'm a youngin' and have never even heard of any of those. I guess I'm revealing my age too, huh!
