I have a 1975 85 hp Mercury that starts and runs good till you put it in gear in the water and then it bogs and won't take gas and dies. Anyone know anything I can try.

Start with checking and cleaning carbs and exhaust. Then you may need to adjust the carbs as well. But do that at the ramp or in a test tank with the lower unit submerged.

Thanks for the reply I have already cleaned carbs all new gas lines new plugs. Would the timing have anything to do with it? Thanks Buford

Re: Not taking gas in gear

low and behold, I came to this forum to post for help with a problem that sounds pretty much exactly like the one bufordg is having (recently rebuilt my carbs as well). I will follow Clams Canino's instructions to try and time my 4 cyl 45 hp merc (Classic Fifty) and report back on how it went. Thanks.

Re: Not taking gas in gear

Buford and TimB, The inline Merc Carbs need a rich idle mixture to allow acceleration. After a lot of folks clean them, they set them to 1-1/2 turns open, which can give a good idle, but be too lean for smooth acceleration. Unfortunately, setting them requires a water test and is by trial and error.
