ive read a little about props on here, but most seem like a foreign language to me...

ill post what i have, and let you guys try to steer me in the right direction.

this is my boat... 16ft something-or-other

i have a 1974 Evinrude 135hp outboard on it, and the prop is gouged up pretty bad..

i want to replace it but dont know what to get. i have no idea how many rpms the motor runs, nor how fast the boat goes with current prop. I purchased the boat last fall, none of the gauges worked and i only took it out a few times. trying to fix it up before summer is over and this is one thing on the list.

i mainly plan on runnin it down the local river (its quite deep, not sure how deep) and a couple local small lakes. what kind of prop/pitch/etc etc should i look at. no looking to be too expensive considering ive got about a grand into the boat total...

any help would be awesome. Let me know if you need any more info.

Re: Not sure which one...

Do some google searches for your motor and find out what the wot rpm range is. Than google prop wizzard and use it, this will put you in the ballpark as to what sizes of prop you can use. Now decide if you want top speed, hole shot, or a balance of both. When selecting a prop you need to keep that rpm range in mind because that is where your engine needs to be running at wot (wide open throttle) otherwise you could damage your engine. Decide if you want an aluminum or stainless prop. Now find a local prop dealer that will work with you and let you test several props to see which one you like the best. Once you find one you like, buy it and have fun.

Thanks for the help.. looks as if rpm range is 4500-5500. I did a google prop wizzard but still am a little unsure of the results. if i am pulling kids on a tube, would that be more top speed or hole shot? i really dont know anything about them so can someone explain what pitch/3 or 4 blade/ ss or aluminum differences are or point me somewhere that says?
how can i tell what the old prop is?

If your pulling tubers, etc.... your going to want more hole shot or "power". A 4 bladed prop is better suited for hole shot and used mostly in watersports. They give great power, but not the best for top speed. Pitch is measured in inches. a 15 pitch prop should move the boat 15" in one revolution of the prop. In general, the higher the pitch, the more power or hole shot you will get but you turn less rpm's. There are many variables when looking for a prop, weight of the boat, rpm range, how the boat is loaded, weight from stuff and people, etc... A stainless prop is prefered as it is more efficient and gives better performance, but they are expensive and if you have a prop strike they can cause more collateral damage than an aluminum one that will break instead of transfering the shock of the strike. Props get expensive so it's still a good idea to try and find a shop that will let you test a few out so you can get one your happy with and not have to buy several props.
