I have a 83 bayliner, aq125, 270 outdrive. I was running at 4000 rpms running great. I gave it more throttle and all of a sudden, it bogged to a stop but continued to run. after that I could only run at about 3000 rpms and made a lot of noise. I pulled the back spark plug (not sure if 1 or 4) was wet, I re-gapped and cleaned still ran really bad and would not get over 3000. is it possible that I jumped time and need to reset the belt or did I tear something up? BTW it will still start and Idle but will not get to speed. thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Not sure what happened.

the rear spark plug was wet with fuel. Have not checked for spark but it starts fine and idles ok, runs more rough than before, sounds like maybe that rear spark plug is not firing. It happened all of a sudden at about 4500 rpms and now sounds like rattle but only at above idle speeds. I can get up to about 3000 rpms but has alot of rattle. Is it possible that I jumped time and #4 is not firing at the right time.

When was the last time it had a full tuneup. Cap rotor, points, condenser, sparkplugs, dwell and timing check.
Could be nothing more than a dead sparkplug, crossfiring on cap due to moisture or something like that.
Might also consider a compression check.

just checked again in driveway. idled fine and trottled to 5500 no problem. thinking now maybe water in the fuel. last tune up was 3 months ago. I will try with a full tank of fuel and a water emulsifier to see what happens. thanks for the help if anyone has any other ideas, im glad to listen

5500 rpm in the driveway tells you nothing more than it runs, and hopefully there was enough water volume from you garden hose that you didn't fry the impellor. Not a good test. You will have to start at the beginning, which is making sure the ignition works proper from the distrib all the way thru to the plugs. A bad plug wire, a fouled plug, just about any failure in the ign will cause your symptoms. Did you notice the temp prior to or right after the failure? didn't over heat did it? Maybe run a compression check.

Re: Not sure what happened.

the temp was 180 before and after. I will run a compression check this week. I have to go the lake to put it in the water (about an hour away) so the only option is to put it on the hose. After it happened it was idleing real rough. At home it idled great... Is it possible I got water in the fuel, The fuel gauge does not work and judgeing by the hours on the lake I should have been very low on fuel.

Re: Not sure what happened.

Update: Checked compression- 115, 115, 110, 0. Put 30psi air on #4 heard air on the exhaust side. Then pulled the head and sure enough, exhaust valve on #4 was gone. checked piston, rings and other valves all good. Replace valve, new gaskets, seated valve.
Just for good measure installed pertronix ignition set timing and put it in the water. Ran better than ever. I think it still could use new coil and wires but that will have to wait for a little while... To all, thanks for all the help.
