not starting (should be an easy one)

i have a mercruiser 120hp 3ltr unknown age at the moment
when i turn the key to start her she will just click but if i stick a screwdriver on the solenoid (not built onto starter) she turns the starter motor properely, also when the engine has warmed up she starts from the key no problem now my question is do you think its the solonoid or the other solonoid built on the starter or something to do with key switch

It sounds like an electrical connection to me....
You will need to get a tester & see where the flow is missing when cold....
Without a year, that's all I got....
