Hi Guys
Have been here several times with questions, and looks like i have another about the same engine.
1960 5.5 Johnson sea horse.
let me explain what i have done at this point and all else have failed.
I have all new ingestion parts including 7 mm wires at first when i primed it she would run for a second or two.
So someone told me to change the hoses i did from the tank to the the gas tank connectors and after i did that she would not even fire over even after i primed it with gas .So please help what i do now?

Re: not running

Have you checked the spark, will it jump a 3/8" air gap and is it bright blue? When you installed the ignition parts, did you torque the flywheel down to the proper spec?
Are the points set to the proper clearance, .020.
Are the coils spaced properly, even with the bosses on the mag plate?
Have you checked the compression?

Re: not running

yes i did torque flywheel down 60 ft pounds i think it was points set at .020 also checked with ohm meter so they are right on.
My compression is about 70 and 72 or so yes the coils are on the bosses right
Now as far as the spark it is hard for me to tell the distance of jump to hold and pull at same time is difficult but with my tester it is very bright
Before i changed all the gas hoses i could get it to run for a second or two by priming it but not now
What am I doing wrong? or were do i need to start over again thanks for your help i would like to get this running asap

Re: not running

Hi Phil,

Those small displacement motors are really fussy about the carb adjustment. If someone played around with, or cleaned up the needles, and changed the needle shape even slightly, the factory specs for initial settings of those needles would nor hold true.
I had a colleague with the same motor, behaving similarly. As it turned out the engine was always flooded. As soon as we figured that out, we started adjusting the needles from fully closed, in small increments, and the engine came to life. If I remember correctly, one of the needle settings was only half of what the manual suggested. Once the engine was running the needles could be fine tuned as per the manual.

Good luck, Peter

Re: not running

Prime the motor just till the bulb is just firm. Disconnect the fuel line and see if it will start in an otherwise normal procedure.
Be sure the choke is working right.
