I have a 76 115 hp that is not charging, how would I find out if its either the stator or the rectifier not working ? I have almost no expirience with outboards so go easy on me.

Thanks

Ben

Re: not charging

I had the same problem with my motor, which is exactly like yours. It ended up being the rectifier. If you have a multi meter there are ways to ohm them out in the manual. Below are the measurements I received after replacing the rectifier and the charging system working. A quick check I would think would be making the voltage/current measurements at the rectifier with the motor idling on muffs.

If you are getting nearly the same AC voltage as me on the 2 non + terminals, this would mean stator is OK. The + terminal on my boat goes straight from the rectifier to the battery.

Stator produces an AC voltage that is fed to the rectifier at the 2 non + terminals. Rectifier converts the AC in to DC, which is then sent to the battery to charge it. Output from rectifier will increase with RPM's.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Battery w/motor off = 13.33vdc

Battery at idle = 14.35vdc / 5.6amps

Battery motor idled up some = 14.90vdc / 6amps

Readings at rectifier/ motor idling:
non + =8.3vac / .7amps
other non + = 8.3vac / .7amps
+ = 14.35vdc / 5.65 amps
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Re: not charging

It's usually the rectifier. All it takes is one little spark to blow them, especially if you ever hooked up the battery backwards, even for a millisecond.
