I have a 1988 bayliner with a Force 85. The trim is stuck in the down position. All I hear is a clicking noise when I try to operate the tilt.Is there an override that I can use so I can at least raise the tilt so I can at least trailer the boat somewhere? I've check the fuse and battery already.

Re: Non working power trim & tilt stuck in down position

I had same problem - different motor. Mine is a Force 40. On my motor, there are two relays situated in a front corner. Ones for up & others for down. Swopped em over, and got tilt up working, although of course tilt down was then goosed. Replaced both relays when I got time, kept one good un as a spare.
Hope this helps....

Bill

jhom-- You have no manual release valve on your model. If you can't work on it where it is, you can disconnect the hydrolic lines and the motor should move freely. Of course, you are going to loose the fluid, and you will have to brace and tie the motor in the up position.

help_ma_boab--
You should have a manual release valve on your 40hp model.

I think there is a hole in the right transom bracket.
Put screwdriver thru the hole, turn screw, release pressure.

Raise motor. You may be able to tighten the screw to hold the motor up, but be prepared to brace it up incase it doesn't hold.

Many thanks BILL & ROSCOE. I think I saw the two relays and the clicking noise sounded like it was coming from there.

I'll try it tommrrow and let you guys know what happens.

JOHN

I swap the relays and still just get the clicking noise. I've trace the two wires from the motor to the relays(blue and green)....should I connect them directly to a 12 volt battery and see if the motor works?? I won't harm anything... will I???? Any other ideas?

JOHN

Go ahead and connect to 12v power with a set of jumpercables.

Re: Non working power trim & tilt stuck in down position

John,
My problem was a sticking relay - hence when I swapped 'em over the good 'un let me trim 'er in one direction. You could try tapping the relays with the handle of a screwdriver while you get the clicking noise. Sometimes thats enuff to 'unstick' the relay. If you're not sure about the relays, take one to any auto parts store, and buy a couple of matching relays - they will not be marine grade - but they will be much cheaper, and will let you know if the problem is with the relays or not. Just a thought - is there enuff juice in the battery?

Bill

I did the tapping thing on the relays...still nothing. I took the pump motor top off and the long bolts looked rusty along with the inside of the case. Possible water leak causing mositure??
Should I beable to turn or remove the armature?
I've found from the forum on how to put the cover back on with the brushes intact using the fishing line to hold them in their holders. The brushes look good. Maybe the motor is just frozen and time for a new one??? Any ideas??

Thanks everyone

HI, forch 89 175,
Im in the same situation, tried grounding the grounding the green, and positive on the blue, nothin, next i plan to open the motor, but you have given me caution about the brushes in your comment.
I think the previous owner hammered the motor, bad idea.
I am also ready to open the release valve, niether clymer, or seloc are specific on where it is, i figure it must be the plug with the allen hole.
thanks for any imput.

Re: Non working power trim & tilt stuck in down position

i had same problem on my 1994 force trim. I disconnected the wires from the relay and tried them directly to the battery. this will tell you if the trim motor is dead. the polarity doesnt matter. postive on one lead will trim motor up or the other way will trim motor down. if the motor is dead you can try taking it apart. its not that hard. i am a newbie and did it. i took my trim motor apart and found that the electrical lead was supposed to be soldered but the solder joint broke. i resoldered and reassembled and it is fine. took me 1 hour and i had no isdea what i was doing. Forget the relay for now. open your cover, disconnect the trim wires from relay and try them directly onto the battery (try either one on positive or negative if it doesnt work one way, try the other) the polarity just tells the motor to go up or done depending on what lead of the wire gets positive.
you need to see if the motor is the problem before messing with the relays.

Re: Non working power trim & tilt stuck in down position

hello, I'm on a roll, i hope, determined that one on the relays was bad, found it rusted completly under the cover. i was able to run the trim up/down as suggested but it was tricky because the ground in normal thru the relay and switched to positive by the oparated relay. the probe showed the ground from the motor winding, and rust was too much resistance to run the motor.
the relay that came out of the unit was a hella, 260388-10, obsolete number. had to go to hella, they cross refereced to he-87423, and sent me to a dealer. relay not available, substitute a
he- 87499, the difference is a resistor accross the contacts. ? not sure what that does forme, but order 3 of them, 5.96,+ 3. p/h.

When you are running power or ground to the wires going to the pump make sure you unplug the relays first dont just back probe the wires into the plugs for the relays. I did just that and it wouldnt work. the relay was grounding the one wire out. I thought i would have to replace the unit but then I thought about it and pulled the relays out and the motor worked great. threw 2 new relays on and it works like new again.

Re: Non working power trim & tilt stuck in down position

I finally got the tilt motor working probabily more by luck than any thing else. Before a put the top back on the motor, using two 10 inch piecies of fishing line to hold the brushes with the springs....I gave the armature a nudge after trying to spin it with my fingers. This must have broken it loose because after putting it back together I tried the tilt switch and the darn thing worked. I moved it up and down several times and still couldn't believe it.

I had not used the tilt for almost a year and figured that it must have froze up from non use...and I did notice some rust under the cover when I had first opened it.

So gentelmen thank you for all your feed back and hope that things work out for you...
