Hi all. I am new here, and hope someone can help me.
I have a 270T sternleg (pretty old) but works fine.
It is very noisy, and the noise appears to be coming from diectly behind the motor.
I suspect it is the universal joint. Is this a common fault/is it likely.
It is not the motor, as it is not there when the engine is revved in neutral
Cheers, Campbell

sounds like your intermediate bearings are shot. Its a common problem.

What engine do you have?

Thanks for that. I have a Nissan LD28 diesel inboard. It pushes the boat along well. In fact, I have just replaced it with another motor the same

most liky PDS bearings. if single bearing the pds can be removed out the rear like the OHC 4 engines. if double pds bearings the enigne might need to come out
upper gear unit needs to be off for both .

Have you ever actually tried that? It sounds good on paper, but in reality it can't be done unless the housing is worn out. The shaft and bearing assembly are pressed into the housing, and there is nothing on the shaft to grab hold of to pull it out.

Don I know what your talking about . but my friend in the states does this and it works for him. the ohc 4s are all single bearing and the ford 5.8FIPNCBCE, 5.8FIPNCMCE, 5.8FLPNCB, 5.8FLPNCM and the gm 7.4GLPNCM, 7.4GLPNCB, 7.4GIPNCBCE, 7.4GIPNCMCE, 7.4GSIXNCB, 7.4GSIXNCM, 8.2GSIXNCB and 5.7GLPMDA, 5.7GIPMDA, 5.7GIPMDACE styles are single bearign. i think that he uses a collet of some type to pull on the pds. he tells me the bearing is a friction fit and will slide in and out of the housing whn the snap rings are out .
the older pds 2 brg does need the engine out.
theres a member here who has the 1 brg pds thats stuck in the borg warner coupler or it would come out the back to.

That may be possible, but if you don't have that very specialized tool that probably costs several hundred bucks, you aren't going to get them out. That's what I mean by the reality thing. In reality, most DIYers aren't going to have those specializes tools.

I know which ones have single and double bearings. I learned a little bit being a factory trained, certified Volvo Penta tech for 13 years.

Hi guys, I really appreciate your imput.
Don, from whay you are saying, it will need to go to a specialist for repair.
From what I have read in the manuals, I came to that conclusion.
Once again, I appreciate your imput. Thanks.

Actually a specialist is not needed. Many of us have successfully replaced those bearing ourselves. However, you do need to pull the upper gear box of the outdrive and remove the engine along with the flywheel cover.

You mentioned replacing the engine, if you can do that, you can do the bearing replacement.

Either way, they need to be replaced soon so you don't do further damage to the flywheel cover.

If you deside to try it yourself, we can help you through it.

Good Luck.

Re: Noisy Volva Penta Sternleg

was the Nissan LD28 diesel adapted to a gas motor T drive?. the diesels often used the borg warner system. some of the borg warner pds adapters were single bearing with the pilot nose .
this gas engine T drive schematic shows a single brg pds with the pilot nose

i still say if its a single bearing pds its sure worth trying to remove it from the rear.
pull the snap rings and wrap a pc of brass shim stock material around the splines . take a huge pair of vice grips and grab the pds and give it a pull. you wont hurt the shaft. My friend has been doing this for 22 years or so. he says in many cases it works but once in a while you get a tuff one. you have nothing to loose by trying.

Since that is not an original engine, it's hard to tell if you have a single or two bearing flywheel cover. One thing, that may have happened if you have a single bearing setup is a pilot bearing/bushing in the end of the crankshaft to center the shaft. If it was left out, it would run fine for awhile until it finally damaged the flexplate and housing.
If that engine can't accept a pilot bearing of the proper size, a double bearing flywheel cover would be needed.

PS: here is an easier link to get that file that captmello posted
