I've got a 2005 m40d2 that I had purchased new. Recently there has been a noise coming from the motor I've never heard before. The motor starts and runs fine, but, theres a metallic rattle through the entire rpm range. It's more noticeable wide open, but always there. To me it sounds like its coming from the flywheel. I noticed the last time I ran it and got it home the flywheel cover was hot. This was 15 minutes after being ran. I don't have a clue how hot a flywheel cover should get, you could hold your hand on it and not have to pull it away, still was quite warm. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: noisy tohatsu 40

Are you sure it's a carbureted M40D2? In the States, it could well be an MD40 TLDI if it was manufactured in 2005.

If it's a D2, the rattle could be something loose in the recoil starter.

It's normal for heat to rise, and for anything at the top of the motor to be quite warm for a while after running.
