Noisey Fuel Pump - VP 5.7gi-b

Hi,

Since replacing my fuel filter, I noticed that the fuel pump appears to be noisier than usual. At idle you definately hear it and also whilst underway at low speed.

I searched the forums and noticed a post stating that I should perhaps check the pressure of the pump - how is this done? When I replaced the fuel filter, I undid the old one, filled the new filter up with fuel, screwed the new filter in relatively tight and then turned the ignition until the pump finished priming, without starting. Have I perhaps missed something here?

Thanks in advance for any help with this!!

Most vacuum gauges are also fuel pump pressure gauges. Simply on the side that the pump has pressure install the gauge and read the pressure.

You may have to jump power to the pump for the 30 seconds or so you need the pump to run.

Sir, what side do you have the spin on fuel filter, of the fuel pump.

One last thing you some how have air seeping in the system, the spin on filter o-ring compromised ? The old o-ring came off when you took off the old filter ?

That won't work, he has a fuel injected engine with 2 pumps and no place to tee in that type line.

Winbasic. You first need to determine which pump is now noiser, low pressure or high pressure. The gauge you need has fittings that screw onto tire valve type fittings. There are two.

Pressure may not tell you the reason for the noisy pump, but sucking air is the most common problem. Do you have a filter other than the engine mounted one?

Also, in the title you call your engine a gi-b, but in your sig, you have GXI-B, which is it? The GXi is a TBI system, the Gi is a MPI system.

Thanks for your replies. I've adjusted my signature - I believe it's a GI-B but there is some confusion caused by the dealer who says it's a GXI-B but in the VP system it's a GI-B. The Serial # is 4012077084 - any clarification would be greatly appreciated!!

As for the filter, I removed the old filter and replaced it with a new VP one, same part #. Chiefalen mentioned about the old o-ring perhaps still being there - I need to double check that as I can't 100% say it isn't there. I assumed that it is like an automotive oil pump and just comes off with the old filter. As far as I can tell, this is the only filter. I've highlighted the one I've changed in case there are more.

What is the best way to try and differentiate between the low and high pressure pumps?

Also, there is no problem with fuel starvation - WOT for 10 minutes without any sign of trouble.

Pull that plastic cover off th engine and it will be obvious. Like I said previously. The Gi is MPI and the GXi is TBI real obvious if we could see under that cover. But the SN says it's a Gi, and it looks like an MPI to me. One bit of confusion on that model is the X indicates extreme service (or something like that) and is usually the higher horsepower model. On the B, it's exact opposite.

Anyway, here is your picture again with some changes in BLUE, pull the cover and take a picture, and answer (if you will) what the line is hooked to.

Thanks Don. The only photo I have is one I took of the flame arrestor but I'm hoping there's enough detail for your trained eye to decipher the engine type - the boat is an hour's drive away and the missus is going to crack if I head down there now so if that photo is no good then I'll take more detailed photos in a week when I get back from holidays.

That lead you asked about where it goes to - it connects to a garmin GFS10 fuel flow meter, then to a inline filter (about 2 running hours old) and then to the fuel tank.

Yea, that's MPI. Forgive the edit, but had to scroll left and right to read the thread. People can click on the link to see the picture.

Thats fine, just make sure the inline filter is not plastic or glass (clear) metal is ok, but not the other.

No problems on the edit - I'm still learning the 'etiquette' of posting!!

The filter is a plastic one which came with the fuel flow sensor so I'll look for a metal one to replace it. So out of all this, I guess I need to remove the main VP filter and check there is only one rubber seal and that it is done up tightly. With regards to the pumps, how can I tell if its the low or high pressue pump which might be causing grief?

I know in the past when I've had fuel problems in a car, it starves at higher revs - if the fuel filter was sucking air, wouldn't this starve at WOT or are the pumps that powerful they compensate for air ingestion?
