I have a 1998 yamaha, 2 stroke, 80hp that started making noise in the lower unit a couple months ago. I was putting it in the water and when I went to back off the trailer it started making a clicking sound. Also when its in reverse the prop won't turn. Here's a video, what do y'all think it is?

Something is worn out or you need to adjust the shift linkage could be as simple as a cable adjustment. Does it have fresh lube in it. The clicking in forward is normal but not in neutral reverse looks good.

I'm not sure. Bought the boat and ran it once and then this started happening. Should I drain the lower unit fluid and see if it's burnt or if there's any metal shavings? I know my throttle cables look pretty rusted so maybe it is a shifting issue.

Well I took the shift cable off and it was doing the same thing when I manually turned the prop. I then pulled the bolt to drain the lower unit fluid and hardly any oil at all came out and there's metal shaving so my lower unit is screwed. I'm fixing to tear into it a bit but figured I'd ask y'all if there's anything in particular I should look for.

I would replace the lower unit oil and see if new oil helps any. could save you tearing apart the leg needlessly. However I'm fairly new to this, there are guys on here with ALOT more experience then me.

I think the unit is toast. One more reason to check the lower unit regularly. I'd have checked it right when you bought it just to be sure it was ok then. I check mine before every launch.
