I have a 1995 Four Winns Cutty with the 5,0 liter V8 and the Volvo Penta SX outdrive. When I bring the outdrive up to use in shallow water and or turn the steering wheel, I get a rattling sound coming from what sounds like the outdrive. When fully in the down position and in the water it sound OK. Any suggestions.

It's the ujoints rattling from the excess angle. Don't go over about 1000 to 1200 rpm when the drive is trimmed up over normal trim. Even less rpm, if you have the drive way up.

Does this mean that they have to be repalced?
If so how tough a job is it?

Also I was told when I had my boat in last year for some repair work that the outdrive was dropping and I needed to replace my electircal motor that controlls the hydralics. Does that sound correct? Now that I have a vechicle that can handle the weight, OK, I plan to take it from a vacation home to my house (170 miles) and perform my own maintanence. I'm mechanically inclined, but this is my first boat and it's a hole new learning curve. After I saw how much a marine center charged me to replace an alternator last year, I decided I had to start doing my own repairs.
