I have 1990 Chaparall 1800SL Mercruiser 3.0L
I had gimbal bearing replaced at the shop few weeks before this, they took outdrive out and did good job going over checking things.
Now, few weeks later after few runs I started boat and hear noise like a belt noise screatchi metal noise, but this wasn't a bell, it was coming from the back of the engine. Engine runs good and all.
Noice is gone after motor gets wormer.
What is this??? Anyone? Any idea??

Hard to say what the noise is, but I would sure pull the drive and look. It's very easy to knock that big ring out of place when installing the drive if it's not glued in. If it moves, you get water. And there is no way to test to see if it's in correctly.

not to say this is the problem, but I had a shop replace my shift cable last year. It developed a noise like you are describing. Took it back to the shop and they said nothing was wrong. This year has to pull the motor to change the coupler and found they had misrouted the cable and it was rubbing on the coupler. Needless to say they put a new cable back on for me and even put the motor back in for me. At least they made it right.

No, you should not have to, but you should check the alignment with an alignment bar.....;)
