Did you pull the engine to change the balancer?

If so...did you use an alignment tool when you reinstalled the outdrive?

If you pulled the engine, and simply placed it back where you found it...then I would suspect the coupler and/or the gimbal bearing have been damaged from mis-alignment.

The location of the noise suggests those two parts.

The outdrive is easy to pull off, and you can check the condition of the gimbal bearing, and check the alignment to the coupler. This should be checked every couple of years (many here do it annually)...especially if you are uncertain as to when this was last done.

My guess is the gimbal brg. try some greas in the zerk (starboard side of transom ring about the middle) 10-15 pumps should purge it. But once they start making noise they are usually on the way out or gone.

Pull outdrive and stick your hand in there and turn it and see if it feels smooth.

Good choice to try a little grease...but be sure to not overdo it, and add it while the outdrive is on the muffs and idleing in neutral.

Let us know the results...!
