2004 – Merc – 60 hp- 4stk- EFI – less than 10 hrs on the engine. At start up, there was water coming from the water pump indicator hole. After 10 minutes of operation at low speed I notice there was no water coming from the indicator hole. I stopped the engine and checked the intake for obstruction, there was none. Restarted the engine and still there was no water coming from the hole. The trolling motor got me to the dock, and I plan to take it to the dealer in the morning.

I did have too run for a short distance with the engine trimmed up through a shallow muddy area, but the water intake was never out of the water. I received no warning indicators from the warning system, and the engine started and seemed to run fine at low power.

The question – By running for possible 10 minutes without water to the engine, what should I be prepared for at the dealer ?

Not mention that the engine had no tell tale for 10 minutes? Several comments about people that make those kind of suggestions come to mind that I just can't mention here  . Tell your dealer what happened. Have him run a compression and leakdown test to make sure that there was no harm done to the powerhead.

It's the old pay me now or pay me later scenario. Being a 2004 engine I would want to know that it is alright. A compression and leakdown tests should only take about an hour and are well worth an hour of the shops time.

There may not be anything wrong if you didn't get an alarm, you may simply have a plugged telltale hose. But in my opinion (as a service manager) have them do the basic diagnostics. An ounce of prevention is worth far more than a pound of cure in this case.

Good luck and keep us posted!

dilligaf,

Thanks for the level headed remarks. I've made an appointment to have the dealer check it out. He tells me a plugged telltale hose is very common and as you have pointed out if there was no warning there probably is no problem.

I will let you know.

I went through exactly the same scenario last fall and the dealer just ran a wire down the telltale hole and all was well like the proverbial racehorse. Now I carry a length of heavy electrical wire that I can just unroll and shove down the hole if I need to. Good Luck.

I think that what P Y A is saying.. is "Don't admit liability". Due to the fact that he didn't notice the absence of water, and no alarm went off, it ran for minutes with no cooling.
Some dealers may say "Your warranty is void"..
I would describe the problem... and that's all.
:D

All,

Thanks for the replies !

I the end neil2fish was correct, the water pump indicator hole was blocked and a shot of air was all it took to clear the problem.

Best part - No charge.
