Have a 1992 tracker evinrude 9.9 that has a problem at getting to wide open throttle.Runs OK in barrel put when on the water I can only get 3500 rpm.
I have rebuilt the carb, replaced the plugs, dumped the fuel tank and replaced supply lines and inline filter. At 3500 rpm motor has a slight flutter..........This motor runs like a pig,
Any idea's of what the problem(s) could be?

Re: No W.O.T.

Patrick
First welcome to I-boats! Sound like you have droped a cyclander. with the engine at idle pull one plug wire and listen for a change in the engine, if it dies put that one back on and repeat, when/if you find one that has no (or verry little) change find why, no spark on that cyclander, bad plug, carb prob (multi carb), low/no compression. have you done a compression test? if so post the results.

Re: No W.O.T.

Try a timing light connected to each wire and when the problem occurs on the water, check to see if you are getting spark to both cylinders...

Re: No W.O.T.

Thanks for the fast response, this place is a wealth of information and I just found it.I will more than likely use this site to the fullest.

motor runs like a champ at low speed, and idles great.Did commpression test and got 80 lbs at both cylinders.
When run at high speed with hose on mouse ears on motor is slugish at midrange than has a surge and than go's to about 7000 rpm. When on the water same motor only gets to about 3500 rpm and there is no surge.

Re: No W.O.T.

A little hint. Don't ever run the motor above 1500-2000 RPM's on the muffs. It will self-destruct...

Re: No W.O.T.

80 is a little low (at least to me) have you done the decarbon thing yet? that could pick the compression up and make it run better, at least you know the rods are intact!

I have done the decarbon thing, and it made a slight differance but not enough to solve the problem.

Have you checked the points (does this engine have points?) and cleaed them. did the the decarb raise compression any?

Re: No W.O.T.

with only 80 psi it may not push your rig well, run but just not like it should! When you ran the test, did you spin the engine until it stopped pumping the tester up? or just let it pump 1 or 3 times? You might spray WD40 into the cylandar (or other oil) and test it again, but it sounds like you need rings.

Re: No W.O.T.

With the throttle wide open,I pulled the recoil start 4 times each cylinder.
