Re: no title

please add a title to the post by going to the original post and clicking edit then advanced then write in a title :)

ask the dmv if you can register the trailer as a home built.

The home built thing works well quite often. You might also ask if a notarized bill of sale from the seller of a non-title state would work.

In Kentucky you can get a title for a boat from a non-title state (for boats) if you have a notarized bill of sale and an affidavit from the seller that they owned the boat for a least five years or by providing the same for all the owners in the last five years.

Re: no title

i tried the home built thing once here. prob not gonna work. illinios can be a pain in the arse when it comes to titles. your better off going to ask them at the dmv what you need to do. many here will have different answers and many will be out of state which i dought will help you at all here in il. and most of the answeres you get here will all prob be wrong when you go to the dmv again. tell them you want to register it and you need to know how.

Re: no title

Illinois doesn't do the home built trailer any more unless you can prove it and are will to sign an affidavit with the secretary of state police.

I bought my boat and trailer from a guy in KY last year. Titled it here in WV. Here all you need is a notarized bill of sale and you make a application for a tittle and have a cop come out and check the numbers and sign off on a form.

Re: no title

Illinois has to have a way to title out of state trailers. Too many states are non-title and the title states aren't going to deny new residents the opportunity to pay money to the state. I guess they have an application for trailer titles. Check the IL DMV site, state DMV sites usually have all the info to get it done.

Sorry, you are wrong.

This story has played out here many times.

IL has no provision for an out of state title-less trailer.

I have sold 2, yes 2 trailers with titles to IL residents because they were in this same dilemma, and I am 250+ miles from IL..

The "homemade option" is gone, unless you can prove it.

Some people have titled the trailers in Maine.
Some people have used a title from another trailer that they scrapped out.

Re: no title

ya pretty much what i thought. i tried the homeade trailer on a log splitter i built on an old boat trailer and pretty much was told no dice. illinois is a pain on this. i live here i know. i bought a 92 ford taurus from a buddie. in the time i paid hin a couple times he lost the title. only reason i was able to get it titled is because the previous ower (my buddie got it never transfered it to his name) was still in town here and i knew him. i had to knock on his door explain that daniel hadnt transfered it and it was still in his name and i needed him to fill out power of attorney papers the DMV gave me and return them. only then could i get the title. if the guy had moved off ide been SOL. forget the homeade route. its a waste of time.

im not to sure torching it into pieces and scrapping it and getting another would be easier. and you can't scrap it unless its cut up without a title either. went through that with a jon boat. they said without the watercraft title it had to be cut up int sheets. so i did lol..

think about it. steal a trailer tear off vin and go to dmv and say i built this. they figured it out. times are different at least in ths state. all i can add is go back to dmv and just level with them. say i aint leaving untill you tell me im screwed, or what i gotta do. they'll have no problem with either. either you can or cant.

Re: no title

Do you have to tag the trailer? If not, i would run it as is. Otherwise there has got to be a way to have it inspected by highway patrol and signed off and then you go to tag office to get title or something similar. Do some research before you go down to the tag office... sometimes they dont know for sure and they will just say no you're screwed.

Re: no title

Welcome to iboats.

Have your brother in-law title it in Tennessee. From what I recall, for local use TN doesnt require a title, however if you intend to leave the state with it it needs to be titled. Therefore if your BIL did own it, he can apply for a title, then transfer it over to you.

http://www.dmv.org/tn-tennessee/other-types-of-vehicles.php

and yes, IL will not title anything that does not have a title

You called it 1st! As it is said, "been there, done that" myself. Illinios is impossible when dealing with titles. Now to find that Illinios is bordered by at least 2 states that do not require small trailers to be titled and provides no way to deal with them. What a joke!

Re: no title

since the OP's BIL still lives in TN, if he spends the $10.50 to get a title (per the TN DMV site). he can then sign the title over to the OP and that would not be fraud. that would be the proper chain of custody.

however since this is the OP's first and only post, it may very well be a troll

Re: no title

These maneuvers constitute fraud.

So what. If the state won't honor a bill of sale on a trailer that was never titled what other reasonable option does he have?
This is not a motor vehicle just a dumb trailer. There are thousands of trailers that do not have any title or owner registration because there are states that do not require them. In NC all you need to get a title is a bill of sale...if the trailer does not have a vin or serial number (many do not) the state will assign one and stamp it on the tounge.
