Re: no thermostat

A lot of people think removing the thermostat will help the water flow better when the motor is actually starving for water from a weak pump. If that's the case, you need to rebuild the water pump.

Motors run best when they can maintain a fairly constant temperature. If you run a motor cold that is accustomed to running warm, you can do damage.

Re: no thermostat

Won't do it any good dennisr. These engines are designed to run most efficently at a certain temp. That's what the t-stat is for. Running cold will also make low end idle poor. And gas milage will decrease. At the worst end of the line is a cold seizure. This happens when the cylinder dosen't expand as the piston does. This is because the water around the cylinder is cold and keeps the cylinder cold. Put one in. Cheap enough.

Most water cooled 2 stroke outboards operate at somewhere around 145-150 degrees.

Re: no thermostat

The only time you should run without the t-stat in is if you are looking for a water restriction. When you run the engine with out a t-stat you are actually making the combustion chamber hotter. The outside of the bock feels cold and the temp probe reads cold but the temp probe is suspended in the water and it doesn’t touch the sleeve. The reason for the combustion chamber temp increase is because there isn’t a restriction in the flow to allow conduction to happen. So no it’s not a good idea to remove them.
