I took my 1987 Sea Ray Seville 17 out yesterday, got it off the trailer and found that I couldn't turn the steering wheel. This is the first time in 2 years I was able to get it in the water. I paid $800 to get a tune up and would like to fix the problem on my own. Does anyone have any idea of what could be wrong or any idea where I can buy a parts/owner's manual for the boat? Thank you to anyone that can point me in the right direction.

Re: No steering

I just picked up an 88 svl and the steering has similar issues so I will be watching for an answer also. For the manuals what I can tell you is it is "not" covered in seloc's online version.

Update: I was told that the steering cable could freeze and that it would only need to be replaced. From what I could tell the cable is about $250.00.

Re: No steering

I would do some checking before I bought anything, try disconnecting the cable back at the engine, see if you can turn the wheel a little to the right and a little to the left, if no then cable is seized, if yes then you have other problems. If you need a cable go to iboats.com to get it, you may need to call them to be sure you get the right one, there are probably differences so you will need to give info about your boat. There is a blue bar across the screen, go to about iboats and click on contact us for the 800 phone number.

Re: No steering

engine84, I was assuming the steering was a hydraulic system (baystar) as used in the 88's. Seloc does cover the cable systems pretty well on their online service. If it is a hyd. system telestar"s website provides pdf. manuals for their products.

Re: No steering

My 87 Seville had power steering so it is highly possible his does also.

Re: No steering

Thanks for the advice. I am currently reading up on how to disconnect everything. When I looked at it today it looks like the cable is trying to move when I turn the steering wheel but I am going to take your advice and disconnect it to see if it is working correctly. Again thanks the information is going to be a big help.
