No stator wires for tach install

Hello all! I would like to start out saying that i've used these forums religiously for other issues i've had & solved & want to thank everyone for their knowledge, but now this is not your everyday problem. I picked up over the winter a 1977 Johnson 35 electric start motor and im installing it on my 67 seastar mustang that i brought back to life last year. In the process of getting her going again i have installed a tach for this motor on the boat. I have the whole pole thing figured out but trying to find a signal wire has been nothing short of impossible. Finally i noticed last night that this motor does NOT have any stator wires (yellows & red) coming down from under the flywheel. Just the 4 wires that make their way to the power pack. I have a rectifyer & terminal block but no stator wires. Charging the battery is not my main concern, i just want to be able to hook my tach up. Is this still possible to do using the charging coil wires that go to the power pack? Surely there has been a need for someone owning a manual start motor to have a functioning tach, because basically this is what i have...a manual start motor with an electric starter even though all the ingredients are there for an electric start model except for the stator. Im looking in my service manual at my wiring diagram for the Electric start version looking for those 4 wires to come out from under the flywheel but know luck. Am i overlooking something? Stator assemblies are mighty pricey`, im hoping i wont have to buy one just to use a tach. Any help i can get from you experts would be mighty appreciated...Please!

Without the stator, the standard tachometer (6 pulse) can't be used. I assume that you installed the rectifier and terminal strip? I don't know if a "Tiny Tach" will operate off of that ignition system or not.... something to check into.

And even if you did have a stator, you also need the correct flywheel. Tiny Tach gets its signal from a spark plug wire, so it "should" work. I've never tried one.

F_R.... I assumed that the Tiny Tach functioned from a conductance scenario at the HT lead but just couldn't remember exactly. Thanks for the reminder.

That's the weird thing here, the terminal strip & rectifier was already on the motor. The flywheel should work seeing how its already geared for a starter. Looks like I should be able to take off the man start charge & sensor assembly & replace with an alternator one. Lol

I may take a mini teach off the truck & test out. I believe I can tap into the orange wire leading to the coil similar to a standard application. Naturally I'll have to double the reading but may work for now. Just stinks that someone had to mess with a good thing. Thanks again guys for the useful input!

UPDATE: Well taking an automotive tach & hooking to the orange wire theory didnt work. I real quickly hooked the + to + terminal on my battery, - to the - side of the battery, then the sig wire to the orange wire of a coil. No results. However when i took the signal wire & hooked it to the HT of the coil, the tach responded while trying to start, however it grounds out the plug & wasnt able to start the motor. Im not sure or not but maybe i should take the - and instead of grounding it on the battery, maybe it should be hooked somewhere else to complete a circuit? I think im chasing my tail here. Looks like i may have to bite the bullet and get the AC assembly.

You said it yourself, you are chasing your tail. Worse yet, keep fooling around and you may blow that power pack.

Thank you F_R, thats just what im going to do, quit while im ahead. seeing how this power pack is brand new. Too bad cause it feels like i lost the battle. Have a good one!

I have no idea why your motor is equipped as it is. I'm just telling you that the alternator flywheel is different than the rope start flywheel.

So its not so much about the fact that the current flywheel accepts a starter as it currently is, but rather inside the flywheel with the pick-up magnets that designates it magneto vs ac assembly? In short, i just can't replace the charge & sensor coil assembly and replace with the AC stator assembly? As im sure you know the AC stator assembly has the charge & sensor coils along with the AC charge coils all in 1 assembly. I just thought that if I had a rope start flywheel for this year of motor that it wouldnt be toothed for a starter. Later model motors had a plastic gear that sprang up to engage the flywheel when pulled, this year i believe used the "i call it the lawn mower wrapped spring in the center" type of system.

Mission Accomplished! Found a used AC Stator assembly off ebay, took of the magneto assembly, installed the AC stator assembly, hooked it up to terminal block, installed tach wire to correct terminal, and we have a working tach now. Like i suspected, my flywheel fit like a glove too. This motor must've had some history where the previous AC stator went bad & someone replaced it with a normal Magneto/sensor assembly. Anyway, shes back to the way it was supposed to be, THANKS TO ALL FOR THEIR INPUT!
