No start with Beeper Issue

Hi guys, I have a 1999 150 H.P XR6 engine.I went on vacation a couple of weeks ago and the motor worked great. I drove home (about 800 miles) with it on the trailer with no trouble. The next time I went to use it I could not get it to fire.I noticed after about 5 seconds of cranking the alarm starts wailing. It is a constant 2 or 3 beeps per second until I stop cranking.I checked the oil tank float with an ohm meter and it works fine.I did have an issue with the 2 psi check valve that keeps the gas from entering the under cowl oil tank.I could blow through it both ways. I changed that and bled the oil pump, but I still have the problems. This motor has the hall effect switch above the pump drive shaft. If this switch is bad does it keep the motor from starting? (safety measure?) .I can't think of why else it would be there. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Your battery is shot, or the starter is drawing way too much current. The low voltage drives the oil alert module nuts. (normal)

There is absolutely nothing in the oil alert system to prevent the engine from starting or running. All it does is make noise if something is wrong. Slow cranking, however, will prevent it from starting.

hope it helps

Thanks for the quick response. Can you tell me what the sensor that gets it's signal from the oil shaft does?If the shaft stops turning does the alarm just sound also? I have a manual, but it doesn't mention this sensor nor does it show it in the schematics.I can take a photo of the sensor and post it if that helps.

It's a hall effect transducer. There is a simple, but specific testing procedure for it. If your manual doesn't cover it, it's the wrong manual. (probably a Seloc)
Get the Mercury manual for the engine.

Now, I told you what the problem is. Why are you still troubleshooting a non-problem?

If the engine doesn't start because it isn't cranked fast enough, any indications you get from the oil alert system are at least unreliable, and probably false.

The motor cranks plenty fast. All batteries plug into a factory onboard charging system. It is definitely something else. Sorry to doubt you on this.I have the Merc manual coming to my local repair facility on Tuesday.

Re: No start with Beeper Issue

My main point is this:
Nothing in the oil alarm will prevent it from starting.

I must have mixed this up with another thread, or else something's been edited, because one factor in my answer was that I assumed a low voltage reading on the dash voltmeter was noted after some cranking.

Now, I digress. The oil alert looks for coil signal on #2 (if wiring's original, really makes no difference) and pulses from the sensor on the oil pump. If both are missing, all is ok (motor stopped). If both are present, all is ok (motor running and oiling.)

Now, if the spark is missing on #2, and you crank it for awhile, it would be normal for the oil alert to sound off.

The problem is no spark. Never mind the oil system. Find the kill switch lanyard and put it back on.

hope it helps

John, You were spot on. My eight year old was getting some baits from the boat the day before. He must have broke the lanyard switch throw right off with his foot getting in or out of the boat. I found it behind the seat. No ones fault stuff just happens.I was able to get in behind the switch with an awl and turn it back on.I will get a new switch and install it next week. Thanks for persevering with my doubting you. This post is solved!!!

How 'bout that for a hip shot.:D

Maybe someday we can wet a line together, perhaps at Clearwater Lake?

I'm pretty sure it was just small-talk

Pretty sure we don't need your comments.

I'm busy, but I like new friends, and also that lake. We'll see if and when it works out, but it does not involve you.

Why would you feel the need to comment on this? Whether it was small talk or not is of no importance to you is it? Thanks for the clarification. I guess I am too stupid to know the difference.

It could be small talk, but fisherman do this with regularity.I have fished with people I have met serendipitously on forums. We teamed up at the launch ramp, fished the whole day had a great time. John seems like a straight up guy from what I have read on here. My post was simply a way to keep the door open to future dialect.

He helped me with a problem that was simple for him to see ,but essential to getting my boat running. He likely saved me some big dough too. I would happily take him fishing if he has time. The other way around would be great too.
