No start but leaks fuel

I have a 2-stroke 50 HP Mercury from 86 and is just now is being a pig to start. Was turning it over with the choke in for some seconds and I noticed fuel dripping into the water from the exhaust. Had the lid off, checked the fuel system but no sign of a leak. Also it seems to spit more fuel out the exhaust than normal. Had real problems with flooding, does this sound like flooding too?

Much appreciated.

sounds to me like the float/valve is not closing properly, does the primer bulb get firm? are the plugs wet with fuel, and i guess the most obvious question would be do you have spark?

Re: No start but leaks fuel

Thanks for the info.

Got it started.

I no longer prime with the ball ever. It starts ok without and in fact I was flooding the hell out of the thing priming it. I am getting good spark, I guess I left the choke in too long and flooded it the other day. Even so it was like the Exxon Valdez out the back of the exhaust in the water when it fired up this evening. You reckon something to do with the carb? Or would it just have spat out residue fuel from yesterdays flooding?

i would think that if it is running good, and you are not having any other issues with starting it, then i would agree that it is most likley just residual fuel from when it was flooded. but if the problem continues then you obviously have another issue. good luck

I do have some fuel in the tell tail flow as well. Is that normal?

Re: No start but leaks fuel

are you sure it's raw fuel coming out the tell tale and not just exhaust and the engine is running rich? the fuel system should not be tied to the tell tale as one has nothing to do with the other, the only possible reason i can see for raw fuel to come out of the tell tale is a blown head gasket and even then i cant see that being possible and still being able to start the engine because if raw fuel is able to get into the cooling system then water is able to get into the combustion chamber.

Re: No start but leaks fuel

Sorry to jump in on this thread but I am having the same issue with a 65 merc 500. I have no pressure on the primer bulb at all. When I squeeze it gas comes pouring out the rear of my motor. Any ideas as to how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Re: No start but leaks fuel

I am new to boating but in my 65 Mustang, every once in a while the gaskets start to disintegrate and chunks get stuck in the needle and seat of the Holley causing the flow of fuel to be continuous from the fuel tank. This causes a major rich condition and it's difficult to get the car to idle as raw fuel is dumping in to the cylinders. Operating above idle is not affected usually . In fact I would have to put the car in neutral when stopping and keep the throttle 1/4 down so that there was sufficient airflow to keep the fuel mixture ignitable (is that a word?).
Today I was towed off the lake due to similar issues in my boat and sure enough when I got home I drained the fuel from the bulb and hose to the motor (50 merc 4 cyl) there were small black chunks in the bottom of the glass jar. I'll replace the hose/bulb (the black chunks must be from there) and try to find the carb to see if I can get it cleaned out.I think this will do it and the symptoms you describe are quite similar to what I'm seeing on my boat. I hope this helps...
