I will get this one thing out of the way; yes I have been searching and troubleshooting all day. I personally hate posting threads like this without exhausting options...but here I am.

That being said, this is my first and hopefully not my last post. My father-in-law recently passed and he gave us his 1992 Sea Nymph (13') with a 1989 Johnson 15hp (J15ECEC). He bought it new and took good care of it. Last time I know it ran was about two years ago.

I was really hoping to take it out tomorrow but I cannot get it started. Here is what has been checked:

- Fuel: replaced with brand new gas and oil, 50:1
- Spark plugs: replaced with new Champion plugs and gapped to .030. Also verified spark visually for both.
- Ignition coils: tested resistance and both are good.
- Carburetor: removed and cleaned, even though it was pretty clean and the seals looked new. Possibly was rebuilt not long ago. Also, the fuel line going into the carb has fuel with squeezing the primer bulb.
- Fuel pump: screen is not clogged.
- Battery: brand new
- Using muffs for water source.

What it does do: it will crank with the electric start but it will not turn over. I have sprayed a 50:1 fuel mix into the carb and it will turn over and run for less than 10 seconds, regardless of choke position.

I haven't checked the points yet simply because I haven't purchased the tool or the bolts needed. That will be next along with compression. So here I am. Help. I know my way around most things automotive but this is completely foreign to me. If I can get it running tonight, my kids will be super happy to go out tomorrow. Thank you in advance.

If you can get it running, even briefly, try squeezing the primer bulb and see it that keeps it running (would indicate a fuel pump issue).

Procedure would be to pump the bulb, choke on full, throttle in advance (start) position, then crank. Initial idle needle setting is 1 1/2 turns open (c.clockwise) from lightly closed, then adjust when motor warms up.

[edit. tank vent open, if vented tank?]

Thanks for the reply.

I am about to head down one last time for the night and will give that a go. Part of me thinks I had tried that already with no luck.

The tank is not a vented tank.

If it will run when you squirt fuel into the carb throat you have some probs in the carb you over looked.

Thank you everyone for the replies.

I took the carb out again and cleaned it one more time. I went as far as using a sewing needle to get in all the passages. Fired right up.

Now the only part I need to buy is the roller on the carb cover since the cap on that wore off. I wrapped it in tape for now.
