ok sirs, have some more issues with 2nd time boat. took boat out of jetty, gave it half throttle and it started to move. gave some more and the speed was the same. full throttle and the same, would not go on plane. the water is picked up jn the stern drive, chevy 260 hp 350. on the way back to the dock it started to over heat. because my son left the muffs on from the night before.i know i should have checked. could that be the reason it would not get up to speed? thanks as always. oh and i have some more questions so do i start new threads for those?

Does the engine RPM's increase but just no speed change? That along with the overheat symptom could indicate an engine coupler slipping and about to go out. You should smell burnt rubber odor in the engine house if that is the case. It will overheat because the raw water pump is in the drive so if the engine races but the drive is not turning then not enough water gets up to the engine.

Engine revving and boat not moving can also indicate a spun prop hub.

How many times have you run this boat? Did it run good for a few trips then showed these new symtoms?

no cap. just got boat and have had a few things go wrong just sitting on the trailer. first time out was yesterday. had some issues wihe the fuel bringing it home off miami river. barely moved. took off filter on two barrel carb and it was total clogged. put 20 gallons of gas in it and made it home but at a little over idle speed. installed new fuel/water seperator. then we tookit out for the first time yesterday.

If the muffs are on the drive it will overheat and there will be drag on the drive. Making it very slow. Plus you probably killed the cooling water impeller that is in the lower unit. Was it really run in the water with the muffs on?

you'd be surprised to hear how often this happens

to op - i would be suspect of your fuel system seeing as how the water sep was nasty and the carb clogged, better give the whole fuel system a good check from tank to carb

also, a FULL tune-up will be in order along with checking the impeller

yes,you are right. that will be the next thing i do. this is the first inboard/sterndrive boat i,ve owned and it,s pretty scary, like if the bellows rip you'll sink or your engine ic a car engine and it can blow up on you. i will try with i.boats help to marineazize it as much as i can and just start saving up for a real mercruiser power plant. i love this boat, its here to stay. thanks a lot dubs.

Your Mercruiser power plant...Is A Chevy small block ( Car/Truck Engine) that has been converted for Marine use......Brass casting plugs, Carb, Alt, Starter, Fuel pump all USCG aproved for spark arresting in a closed/confined motor compartment area.

Post up pics of what you got and these guy's will set you straight on what/or if you need anything.

Good Luck!

He posted pictures on his other thread. http://forums.iboats.com/mercruiser-i-o-inboard-engines-outdrives/engine-wont-start-592360.html

It has an automotive distributor (with the window to adjust the points), hard to tell about the rest.

Was just looking at the cooling system, no wonder it overheats. No circ pump, no bypass to cool the elbows till the stat opens, hard to say what the impeller looks like. Lots of problems with that whole setup.

Don't get all crazy about not bothering us, I missed your last post yesterday.

Sure it can be fixed, anything can be fixed with enough money, but you have a lot of issues you are going to have to deal with.
This thread started as a rpm/speed problem and morphed into an overheat problem. That's when things get confusing.

ok. i dont know whats so confusing so lets start here. took boat out today. ran great in nowake zone and soon as we got out of the inlet i gave it gas and it would not get up on plane. i trimmed the tabs and gave it gas and it just would not go. so we trolled awhile and then it sputterd and died. would not start. called sea-tow. plenty of gas. i know its fuel related, most likely the carb. thanks for the help.
