Re: no spark

S/Plugs removed, key in ON position, crank engine and double check spark, should jump a 7/16" gap. If no spark, disconnect the large main electrical plug at the engine, check spark again (crank engine by engaging the starter solenoid with a jumper).

If you now have spark, the most likely cause is a shorted ignition switch. If still no spark, the probable cause is a faulty powerpack.

Re: no spark

This happened to me last week. Mine was caused by the stator. I used the Clymer shop manual, and solved it in about 30 minutes. Heres the order to check:

1. kill switch: engine turns off by grounding out the igntion. Doesnt matter if you turn off the engine, or pull the lanyard. Look for a single black wire on the engine. and unhook it. Check for spark. Should be somewhere on top near the flywheel.

2. Check stator: Look for 2 pin harness coming from flywheel on top. Check the resitance between the two pins. No resistance equals bad stator. Also use an analog voltmeter and check the AC volts on those two pins as you crank the engine. No volts= bad stator.

3. Check coil unit thingy: I always forget its real name. Its just below the stator. Check resitance between middle pin, and four surrounding pins. Should each be about 40-50 ohms.

Im not a mechanic, just another weekend do it yourselfer. Mine was the stator. Shop guy said its probably only one part of the system causing the problem. My stator cost me $175 and was not refundable. SO I took mine to the shop, and compared the 2 side by side with an ohmeter to make sure I was replacing the correct part. Oh yeah, this took me forever. THE FLYWHEEL NUT ON MY 88 SPECIAL USED A 1 3/8" socket. My book didnt say the size, and I spent a day testing sockets I bought at a pawn shop. Hard to find this size. You will also need to use a harmonic gear puller to get the flywheel off. You can rent one at a auto supply store like Autozone for basically free. Just had to leave a deposit. Good luck. I highly recommend buying the CLimer book. It has paid for itself many times over. Step by step help.
